Facing Challenge
Our readers would notice that you could not find the
last issue of Sameway in our distribution points on two
weekends before. Some readers called our office on the
following Monday checking whether we had stopped
publishing or not. No, we still publish but only because
our printer had faulty machine on that week, we had
delayed the distribution of Sameway. We apologize for
the inconvenience here. We shall try our best in future to
ensure the publishing of Sameway on time. The queries in
our readers is reasonable as many had noted that less and
less Chinese publications are found in the community and
those still survive, become thinner and thinner and less
and less copies are printed. Fortunately Sameway is not.
In the past 4 years, Search Engine Optimization, SEO has
changed how large corporate advertise. Mainstream business
use SEO to find out clients who are interested in their
products and services and send out advertisement directly
to them. The traditional media market is disturbed.
The recent amalgamation of media giant Fairfax and Nine,
ended the 160 years history of Fairfax media in serving
Australia. Clearly the lack of motivation for Fairfax management
to continue their service throws great doubt on
the destiny of their regional publications around Australia.
For Chinese publications, the coming of WeChat which
changed the way how people buy or sell things. The
influx of tremendous volume of WeChat messages had
prompted people to think whether printed media can still
exist?
Yes, SEO or WeChat really are technological breakthrough.
However scholars have noted that they could not totally
replace the role of media. They are only able to deliver
messages to those who are interested in their products.
They simply cannot reach to new markets. They are selling
tools for connecting existing clients rather than marketing
tools.
The use of SEO and WeChat also affect the privacy concern
of the public. The society is responding by limiting
their use and held them accountable. The influx of flooding
messages through social media has led to dominance
of false news and unbelievable messages. This has caused
great nuisance among public and lower their advertising
capacities.
Yes, printed media will face great challenges. However I
believe that quality magazine can still survive. After market
adjustment with low quality products no longer exist,
there should a greater development possibility for quality
products.
Sameway will try our best and we hope you can support
us in this fight.
