INSIDE LEFT KNEES UP This photograph, taken by Benjamin Reeves, is entered in the photography studio’s archives as ‘Miss Keast: school at drill’, and dated 1920. A search in the archives of the Sussex Agricultural Express reveals the teacher in question, on the far right of the picture, to be Alice Elizabeth Keast, the headmistress of Firle School from 1918 to 1923. A further search in the records tells us that Alice Keast was born in 1886, in Cosham, Hants, thus was around 34 when the picture was taken. We know that she went on to become headmistress at Laughton School, and after that at East Grinstead. The children – girls to the left, boys to the right – certainly look very well drilled, though nobody has quite got their foot positioning right, except for Miss Keast, of course. Many of the girls are wearing pinafores, and the boys are in shorts and jackets; the chap fourth from the left seems to be wearing a khaki military tunic. ‘Drill’ was the Victorian/Edwardian term for what we now call PE, and involved a series of exercises such as arm swinging, trunk bending, marching on the spot and balance exercise (as in picture). 1909’s Syllabus of Physical Exercise for Public Elementary Schools, which may well have been the basis of Miss Keast’s class, stated: ‘In order to obtain the best results from a lesson in Physical Training it should be rendered as enjoyable and interesting as possible to the children. This will depend partly on the selection of exercises, but also, to a very great extent, on the personality and methods of the teacher. Impatience on the one hand, and hesitation on the other, should be avoided, and, while cheerfulness is greatly to be desired, the manner should be firm and decided in order that discipline may be maintained.’ Miss Keast was very active in the local community, and often appeared in the Sussex Agricultural Express, whether for the organisation of the parish flower arranging show (1920), ‘cleverly acting charades’ and ‘singing old English songs in character’ (1921), winning the autumn-sown potato competition at the Laughton Village Fair (1925), or leading a school choir in the WI Lewes Choral Festival (1927). She was an accomplished piano player and, while she was teaching at the school, organist of Firle Parish Church. She died, a spinster, aged 50, in 1937.
