FOOD L’Isola Buona An Italian deli in Newhaven Ten years ago a Sardinian family decided to set up a warehouse on the Bridge Industrial Estate near Newhaven Town station in order to provide food from their Mediterranean island for the local Italian restaurants and shops. Three years ago they thought they would add a delicatessen, open to the public, at the front of the warehouse, selling hot and cold food, wine and coffee. And so we have a wonderful deli in an incongruous setting. We go on a Friday mid-morning, on the way to a big lunch in Alfriston, so we can’t enjoy anything from the hot menu with our coffee – no Sardinian flatbreads or organic folded pizzas, then. Instead we opt for a piece of Sardinian hot cheesecake (£2.50), which fits the bill entirely, for elevenses: not too sweet, nicely crumbly. But we do have to cater for a dinner party the next day, so we go a bit mad on the delicacies in the cold counter: wild boar and pork prosciutto, Sardinian salami, dried mullet roe for grating. Plus a bottle of limoncello (“put it in the freezer”), some crispbread, and some malloreddu pasta shells. It doesn’t come cheap, it must be said, but we leave the place feeling like we’ve just raided a treasure chest. It doesn’t harm matters that the nice Italian woman serving us is extra helpful, encouraging us to try before we buy and wrapping everything as if it were a present, in green gingham paper.
