144 VIVALEWES EDITORIAL There was a heated semantic debate in the meeting we held some months ago to decide the Viva themes for 2018. “Surely the game is called ‘scissors, paper, stone’,” I complained. “It’s ‘rock, paper, scissors’,” insisted everyone else. There was only one way to decide. My stone got smothered. Or should that be ‘rock’? Later, out of curiosity, I looked into the matter. The University of Sussex linguist Lynn Murphy, author of the blog Separated by a Common Language, is an expert on the difference between American English and British English, and she had an entry on it. The game, it appears, dates back to Victorian times, and was known as ‘scissors, paper, stone’ in Britain, and ‘rock, paper, scissors’ in the States. The American name, she revealed, has gradually taken over. ‘Scissors, paper, stone’ has gone the way of the British billion. ‘Rock, paper, scissors’ it is, then. But what does that mean, theme-wise? Well, it’s a broad church, denoting arts & crafts, as well as games. It’s got a ‘back to school’ feel to it, too, which was why it was chosen in the first place. After all that, there’s just enough space for me to welcome the new editor of Viva Lewes, Charlotte Gann, taking the reins from next month onwards. I’ll continue as a contributor (and a director), but am taking a step away from all the editorial duties, in order to research and write a book. This is my last note in this space, then… I very much hope you enjoy the issue. THE TEAM .....................
