The team finished 13th in New Zealand last year and appear to be one of the teams to beat in the South Island after another strong Christchurch campaign. The team completed a dominant season in the Thomson Trophy secondary schools competition with a 86-61 win over Rangiora High School, last Tuesday. Cashmere won all nine of their Thomson Trophy round-robin encounters before winning both their quarter-final, semi-final and final. They did this while outscoring their opponents by more than 300 points during the campaign. Last month they had a fourgame unbeaten trip to Auckland with wins against Westlake Boys’ High School, St Kentigern College, Rangitoto College and defending national champions Rosmini College. Women boxers to shape up in first pro event • By Jacob Page HALSWELL’S Megyn McLennan started boxing five years ago purely to lose weight. In 11 days time she will be part of the first professional women’s bout to main event a show in Christchurch. The 39-year-old registered nurse will be in the main event of Strikeforce Boxing’s Pacific Warriors 2 fundraising night at the Hagley Sports Centre. There will be at least six corporate and amateur bouts on the under card with McLennan facing New Zealand Muay Thai champion, Michaela Jenkins in the four-round contest to end the night. “If you’d told me I’d be boxing professionally five years ago, I would have laughed in your face,” McLennan said. “When I first started, the coaches would laugh at me because I was the person who could barely run and couldn’t do a push-up.” McLennan will enter her 11th bout overall and second professional outing after losing to Nelson’s Dawn Chalmers in Motueka earlier this year. “I like to think I’m a busy fighter but working with (Strikeforce coach) Steve Brown has really sharpened my game, “He gives us a toolbox of skills we can use in the ring and it’s up to us to make the most of it.” Kirwee-based Jenkins is coming off winning her New Zealand Muay Thai title in June and was offered this bout almost straight away. “I’ve been in camps since February so it seemed like a good match-up to take.” Jenkins said she was impressed with McLennan’s effort in her loss to Chalmers. “I thought she showed how tough she was because Dawn is a very credible fighter so I’m looking forward to the challenge of taking her on.” New Spiralin Products NOW AVAILABLE “Highly effective natural antiviral, anti fungal, anti bacterial & cell regenerative properties’ Best Motorbuys TM ANYTHING WITH A MOTOR!
