A new lease on life for Bob
For Bob Kirk, resident at Ryman
Healthcare’s Essie Summers
Retirement Village, his serviced
apartment has been a blessing.
The icing on the cake,
however, is the pool table in the
village lounge, and Bob is king
of the chalk, happy to take on
anyone who fancies a game.
Bob, 94, moved into the
village in May for respite care
after a bad fall. He needed a
place to recuperate and heal.
“I still need to go to the physio
and recover but I have moved
into my own serviced apartment
now,” Bob says smiling.

carpenter.

Bob has made quite a few
friends with residents and
staff alike.
He also likes to join in the
Happy Hours and is looking
forward to joining in on
activities and outings when he
has recovered.
For now, he is happy to be
near everything.
“My room is handy,” says Bob,
“It’s nice and warm and close to
everything I need to go to.”
The village, which was rebuilt
after the 2011 earthquakes, has
a strong culture.

“It’s certainly a very vibrant
village,” says Josie.
“The staff are lovely, and they
celebrate milestones.”

“It also has what older
people value; a bus stop right
outside the village! It’s great
for those residents who don’t
drive anymore.”
Josie says that serviced
