Welcome to this issue of The Garage THERE’S no escaping just how fast new cars are developing technically, but with that comes a need for technicians to keep up-to-date too. Of course main dealer technicians might have an advantage when it comes to the one or two marques that workshop covers, but for the all-makes independent sector it’s clearly more difficult to cover a multitude of makes and a multitude of technologies. Luckily there’s plenty of technical assistance out there: Some suppliers operate their own training schemes in conjunction with component manufacturers and distributors, which has to be welcome when the increased complexity of new cars makes learning on the job difficult at the very least, and impossible at the very worst. As we are well into the 21st century there are changes – particularly to cars and the technology needed to work on them – but in many ways things haven’t changed greatly. There’s the need to learn, and without that technical knowledge business will be lost. With that knowledge, profitability is on a more secure foot. There’s also a look at MoT-testing equipment. As we all know, technology-laden cars have had a big effect on what the test includes and how it is conducted, and that in turn leads to greater investment in testing equipment. And there’s a look at the AutoElectro-supported Bradford Classic, a city-centre old car extravaganza that gathered together a stunning selection of older cars.
