Debate to discuss if
‘you are what you eat’
UNIVERSITY OF Otago,
Christchurch scientists
are increasingly studying
links between our diet
and disease because of the
‘profound’ impact of what
we put into our mouths on
our physical and mental
health.
Professor Margreet
Vissers is associate
dean for research on
the Christchurch health
campus, where on Sunday
a debate will be argued
over whether ‘you are
what you eat,’ as part of
the campus’ annual public
open day.
Gary McCormick will
be master of ceremonies
at the Showcase debate
which will feature doctors,
researchers, medical and
postgraduate research
students from the campus.
Prof Vissers says health
researchers are increasingly
focused on the impact
of diet on our health,
including the effects on
gut health; as a risk factor
for heart disease, diabetes
or cancer; and the importance
of micronutrients
– vitamins and minerals
– for our immune system
and mental health and
well-being.
“At the University of
Otago, Christchurch we
study the impact of diet on
health, from a cellular level
in our laboratories right
through to clinical studies
in the areas of heart disease,
cancer, mental health
and severe infections. The
profound impact of food
on health is topical and a
major contributor to modern
day health research
programmes.”
Prof Vissers says
research studies on the
Christchurch campus relating
to diet include studies
looking at the impact of
plant fibre on the development
of bowel cancer, how
vitamin C levels are linked
to cancer growth and severe
respiratory infections,
and whether tart cherry
supplements can ease the
symptoms of people with
gout and arthritis.
Scientists and postgraduate
students involved in
these and other studies will
open their laboratories to
the general public at the
annual Showcase, which
also includes tours of the
high-technology simulation
centre where medical
students can practice
complex medical scenarios
before encountering them
in real life.
