Dear Reader,
Welcome to the Winter issue of
School Building.
This month Nicolas Maari, Head of
Architecture at Pellings, looks at
the dilemma of needing more
schools where there’s not the land
available to build, and the pros and
cons of using existing buildings –
including old office blocks,
factories or hospitals.
Our case studies include The
McAvoy Group’s design and offsite
construction of the Lynch Hill
Enterprise Academy, a £20m
education campus and one of the
largest ever modular schools to be
built in the UK. We also visit the
£38m School of Chemical and
Process Engineering faculty which
was transformed as part of the
University of Leeds’ ambitious
£520m five-year programme of
works, by principal contractor
Galliford Try, and M&E specialist
contractor SES Engineering
Services.
And as a solution to capacity and
quality issues, a new report
commissioned by Net Zero
Buildings points the way to off-site
building and longer term leases.
continues.
16 Editor’s Article - School report hails off-site construction
A new report points the way to off-site building and longer term leases - as
Redmoor School is a prime example of the new way forward.
22 Interior Design & Fit Out - Enhance school interiors with Gradus
Lynette Bowden, Group Product Manager for Gradus, looks at what contractors
may want to consider during the specification stage to help create a safe
environment for students.
27 In My Opinion - The challenge of the conversion
Nicolas Maari, Head of Architecture at Pellings, thinks that the quality of
children’s education should not be compromised in the rush to provide for
increased pupil numbers.
28 Case Study - Streets ahead, & weeks ahead!
Raymond Millar, Construction Director at The McAvoy Group, looks at the
Electric Heating is often perceived to be
expensive and uncontrollable and thus often
overlooked as a suitable heating system for
Schools. However, a new era for Electric Heating
has arrived thanks to a Regulation change, ‘LOT
20, and new technologies being developed
which demonstrate Electric Heating can operate
in conjunction with Renewables and play a part
in managing the Grid for Demand Response
purposes. Calum Black, Operations Director of
The Electric Heating Company explores these
developments in more detail and the impact
these could have for Schools.
