Pupils dig up the past PUPILS AT Northcote School assumed roles as geologists, palaeontologists and volcanologists at their ‘science day’. The year 1-3 pupils dug for dinosaur bones and crystals in the school sandpit, explored fossils and fossil patterns, learned about the formation of crystals, tried on fireproof gear and examined minerals and rocks under a UV light. Principal Justin Perriam said the pupils had a “fabulous time” getting stuck into science. “Taking on the role of scientific explorers provides opportunities for students to engage in clear and simple science learning activities from a young age,” he said. “This is exactly what our junior classes at Northcote School have been doing this term – actively exploring and learning about things that have lived in the past and living things today.” He said the day ran smoothly with the help of Canterbury University geology lecturer Kate Pedley, who set up and ran some of the hands-on activities. Seven-year-old Lily said she loved digging for crystals. “I loved the day because I got to go in our whanau groups and dig in the sandpit, where I found a crystal and everyone wanted it,” she said. • By Ashleigh Monk “WHEN YOU’RE little, you hear the word cancer and you immediately think death.” This is how Deirbhile Roberts felt when she found out her mum had breast cancer five years ago. And while the 15-year-old’s mum won her fight with the disease, Deirbhile was inspired to do something to raise money for people going through their own battle. So she shaved her head. Deirbhile, who is a student at St Andrew’s College, took part in Shave for a Cure and has so far raised almost $4000 for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand. “I kind of just wanted to help people in a way that I actually made a difference.” Deirbhile said she was more than halfway to her $7000 goal, and the support so far had been “amazing”. “It was a bit slow at first, but then my mum sent a message to a lot of my relatives overseas and then hundreds of dollars started coming in,” she said. “Everybody at school has been so supportive and helpful. It’s just been really amazing.” And as for having no hair, Deirbhile said she liked her new look. “I thought it was going to be a lot weirder to not have any hair, but it’s been alright.” St Andrew’s College dean Liz Gormack helped Deirbhile through the process and said she was “incredibly proud” of the teen. “I was a bit nervous. I wasn’t sure how she’d be feeling going through with it . . . I was almost going to get it done myself if she decided she didn’t want to do it,” she said. “It’s such a good cause. It’s one that a lot of us have to deal with in our lives. I’m just so proud of her, she’s been so brave and SHAVED: Deirbhile Roberts shaved her head to raise money for cancer patients. calm.” She said a detailed plan had to be mapped out so that Deirbhile had outlined goals that did not clash with school regulations. “It had to be done at the end of term so her hair could grow over the holidays. Jean, 95, who was a pharmacist, and Dick, 98, who was an accountant, moved into the village early 2006 and lived in their townhouse for 10 years. Ngaio Marsh village has provided the perfect solution to their needs over the years since then. The village, located in Papanui, features independent townhouses, serviced apartments and a resthome and hospital, all set amongst award-winning gardens. “It was close to our church, close to where Dick had been Residents Jean and Dick Yates love life at Ngaio Marsh Retirement Village working, and it was all familiar territory,” says Jean. “We loved it. It suited us extremely well.” Ngaio Marsh is close to both Merivale and Northlands Malls, and also boasts an all-weather bowling green, indoor heated swimming pool, spa, atrium, library, gymnasium, hair salon, bar, shop and croquet lawn. “As much as we loved our townhouse, the time came when we needed more support,” says Jean. Dick moved into the resthome and Jean into her serviced apartment in 2016. “We’re still free to come and go” says Jean. “It’s a big advantage really, we have alarms so if you have a fall you just press it, and they come running.” Ngaio Marsh sales advisor Marie Kyle-Stevenson says that serviced apartments can be tailored to each resident’s specic needs. “Serviced apartments are one-bedroom or studio apartments that come with a range of services, including meals, housekeeping services, morning and afternoon tea,” says Marie. “It becomes easier for people. With our continuum of care, our townhouse residents have priority to move into a serviced apartment should they need a little extra assistance. “As a couple it is convenient to be able to stay in the same village because in life you do not always move forward at the same rate with your health.” For Jean, the biggest advantage of living in a serviced apartment at Ngaio Marsh is that she is still near her husband. The resthome is located downstairs from her, just a “lift ride” away. “The fact that we’re in the same building means that we don’t even have to go outside, nothing has changed really,” says Jean. They spend time together every day, either in Jean’s serviced apartment, the resthome lounge or in Dick’s room. “I also still go to her Happy Hours and she goes to mine,” says Dick. “The staff are just marvellous. You get to know them very well and they are so friendly,” says Jean. But it all comes down to being, and feeling, at home. As Dick gets up to leave, Jean stops him. “Have a cup of tea rst, dear,” she says. And Dick sits down smiling.
