But they didn’t forget to get dressed that morning – the school took part in a pyjama day to raise money for Ronald McDonald House. School office manager Angela Dini said the children jumped at the chance to wear pyjamas to school. “It wasn’t that they were running late but they were participating in this term’s mufti day. Our student council chose the recipient for the great work they do.” The pupils raised $220 for Ronald McDonald House. School leaders Stella and George, along with principal Julie Greenwood, presented a cheque to Ronald McDonald House on Friday. Former pupil gives back to school Rotary Club helps out at St Mary’s • By Ashleigh Monk SIXTY YEARS ago Strowan’s Michael Dore walked the halls of St Mary’s School. The former pupil was welcomed back to the school last week as a member of the Christchurch Rotary Club, which is helping St Mary’s with several projects. On his return, Mr Dore presented a set of brand new sitting benches to the school. “With the connection to the school and going there, it’s great to be involved,” he said. “To be asked to do that and be involved in it was really good. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and seeing the children that were there.” He said the school had changed a lot since he left in 1858, but St Mary’s Church is still standing next door. “The classrooms aren’t the same as what they were in my day. But the church is still next door, and I was actually at the laying of the foundation stone of the church, and I got married in the church. And my brother’s name is just under mine, we both actually joined the school on the same day.” Principal David O’Neill said he was “overwhelmed” by the club’s generosity. “The club approached me and said they’d like to adopt our school and have something to do with us. It really is wonderful, what they’re giving us is about $6000 worth of bench seats,” he said. “For them to be able to donate those to us means we have extra money to buy things for the students in terms of their learning. We’re very grateful.” He said having Mr Dore present the benches was an honour. “It’s amazing that it was 60 years ago he went here as a wee fellow . . . it’s a nice part to the story with a special connection after all these years.” Mr O’Neill said the school had struggled following the NOR’WEST NEWS earthquakes, with enrolment falling from 120 to 60. It had to operate for a term in St Teresa’s School hall, then in tents as the school was repaired. “We’ve had a really interesting journey through the quakes . . . everything is coming right and you get nice people like those from Rotary coming and assisting and that’s fantastic.” Mr O’Neill said the club would work with the school on a number of projects, including a garden on the school’s grounds. •More schools, page 10 JOIN US NOW!
