Tuesday September 25 2018 7
crew win at TheatreFest
• By Ashleigh Monk
DOUBLE STANDARDS when
it comes to what boys can do and
what girls can do, is highlighted
in a play which led Rangi Ruru
Girls’ School to victory at the
national TheatreFest.
THe students performed Evan
Placey’s Girls Like That, which
pointed out the way in which
girls and boys are perceived
when it came to sexuality,
and earned the best youth
production and best overall
production awards at the event
in Wellington.
Director of theatre arts Peter
Rutherford said the play focused
on a character named Scarlett,
who shared a nude photograph
with a boy which was then
shared around publicly.
The story followed Scarlett as
she dealt with the fallout of the
photograph, ultimately ending
with her implied suicide.
But this was not the original
plot, which ended with Scarlett
discovering stories about her
strong female ancestors and
overcoming the scrutiny she
faced.
“It was originally a 90min play
and I cut it down to about 25min
to make it more reasonable,” he
said.
“I tried to get an essence of
the play without destroying it.
It was tricky, the moment you
start cutting things out you risk
diluting it, or losing some sense
from it.”
He said the point of the play
was to show the power that girls
had over other girls, and that
women should support each
other.
“At the end, Scarlett says:
‘You know, it’s funny, boys
have always been a*******s but
it seems to me these days that
girls have become the a*******s
that boys used to be.’ It’s kind of
about women gate-keeping the
behaviour of other women.”
He said he and the students
were stoked at being awarded
best youth production and best
overall production.
“I thought it was a really
great process, the people were
wonderful, and it was just a
really fabulous, supportive
occasion for people who love the
craft of theatre,” he said.
“We were blown away. There
were some really incredible
productions from other teams
. . . we were up against some
brilliant teams, I wasn’t
expecting to win, so it was a
pleasant shock.”
