"I like taking risks, and I like taking
challenges," she said. "And I like making
a difference."
Which brings us full circle. O'Toole
spent three-and-a-half years in Seattle,
including the aftermath of the Seahawks'
stunning loss to the Patriots in the Super
Bowl in February 2015, before returning
to Boston again to serve, gratis, on a
committee to delve into the Massachusetts
State Police overtime scandal.
"(Col.) Kerry Gilpin (the current
Superintendent of State Police) called and
asked if I'd be on a team of consultants,"
O'Toole said. "She's doing the right thing.
When these things happen, your biggest
challenge is stepping aside and looking to
the future."
O'Toole has developed some staunch
philosophies when it comes to police
officers who become corrupt. "Nobody,"
she said,"hates bad cops more than good
cops."
O’Toole said her time in Marblehead,
which began when she moved here from
Pittsfield when she was 13, formed a
great foundation for her career. Her
father also influenced her.
"He was a teacher," she said. "And
every day, he left the house with a smile
on his face. He probably could have
made more money doing something else,
but teaching is what he loved.
"I grew up with an extraordinary
education thanks to Marblehead," she
said. "I also grew up with people who
emphasized that you have to love your
work."
And that, she said, has never been an
issue.
