From Steven Spielberg comes a
sci-fi phenomenon based on Ernest
Cline’s bestselling novel of the
same name.
The year 2045 sees earth and its people
besieged by poverty, overcrowding and
energy crises. Humanity’s redemption
comes in the form of an immersive
online gaming platform: the OASIS.
Created by reclusive genius James Halliday
(Mark Rylance), the OASIS allows
the masses to liberate themselves from
their dystopian reality. However, in
exchange they are shackled by their
addiction to the OASIS.
When Halliday dies, he wills ownership
of the OASIS to whomever discovers
the Easter egg he buried within the
game. In their efforts to find it, thousands
of Gunters (egg hunters) devour every
piece of Halliday trivia available and
become consumed by the 80s culture
Halliday was so fond of. One such person
is teenager Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan).
Watts much prefers the OASIS to his
bleak existence in The Stacks, a shanty
village of trailers piled precariously atop
one another. He is joined by four others,
who teach him that perhaps reality is
not so bad after all.
