WHILE ON HOLIDAY
While bisphosphonate drugs such as alendronate (Fosamax), ibandronate
(Boniva), and others are very effective in treating the bone-thinning disease
“osteoporosis,” they have been linked with atypical femur fractures. Consequently,
patients taking these drugs are often advised to take a “drug
holiday” every five years. However, recent research suggests that women
who stopped using bisphosphonates after years of continuous use may
have an increased fracture risk. Researchers found that 15.4% of those
taking the drugs for an average of 6.3 years before stopping suffered
fractures over the following 6 years, primarily during the fourth and fifth years
of their drug holiday. This study suggests that older patients with lower bone
density, in particular, should be closely monitored while on drug holiday.
Bone is constantly renewed throughout life. After age 25 to 30, however,
people begin to lose bone more quickly than they build it. When osteoporosis
is left untreated, it may lead to broken bones or fractures, usually in the hip,
spine, and wrist. Some bone loss is a normal part of aging, but osteoporosis
is not. To learn more, please call VILLAGE PHARMACY at 781-334-3133.
We are located in the Colonial Shopping Center.
HINT: Bisphosphonates help prevent loss of bone density by encouraging
“osteoclasts,” which destroy bone during the remodeling process, to stand
down.
