I now have a fantastic role with fast growing tech company Seequent.” Jessica’s Story Jessica is a qualified and experienced radiation therapist who is changing direction into tech because of the increasing connection between medicine and technology. SHIFT is adding tech to Jessica’s existing clinical experience, while working with real clients from Dunedin’s tech sector. Jessica’s first group project involved working with Kylie Robinson and the team from Igtimi, and her latest group project has been developing an app for Otago Museum. “The project work has really extended my knowledge into areas I would never have considered working in just a few months ago, but now I feel like I can tackle diverse problems and definitely create solutions. The Star Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Thursday October 4 2018 17 News Father still looking for answers over son’s death • By Georgia O’Connor-Harding IT HAS been one year since grieving father Geoff Booth lost his 21-year-old son to suspected suicide. Yet his battle to seek answers into whether his son Liam received the necessary help from health authorities leading up to his death remains ongoing. Last year Mr Booth laid a complaint with the Canterbury District Health Board after Liam was found dead in Beckenham Park, near his flat, on October 2. The case is before the coroner. The CDHB has since undertaken a serious event review to identify opportunities to improve its systems and processes. Mr Booth said in the original report the CDHB “attributed no blame to themselves” and described the report as a “whitewash.” His concerns were the report did not name any of the staff members involved and dates leading up to Liam’s death were incorrect. The CDHB has since come back to him with a revised copy of the report. CDHB mental health services clinical manager Vicki Dent said family involvement and feedback to identify any inaccuracies is a vital part of the review process before the final report is released. Mr Booth is planning to lodge a complaint with the Health and Disability Commissioner. Last week Mr Booth received an apology from CDHB chief of psychiatry Dr Peri Renison for Liam’s THREE GARDENS are set to brighten Cathedral Square over the summer months. Mr Booth said the apology is a start, but the CDHB needs to act on recommendations from the review. The recommendations were ensuring the treatment and discharge policy is followed for future patients and information for supporting families is made available. The policy includes involving the family if permission is granted by the patient, and addresses discharging goals and the physical and mental health needs of a patient. Mr Booth said the CDHB didn’t follow the policy in Liam’s case. “I wasn’t privy to any of that because it didn’t happen,” Mr Booth said. Eighteen days before his death, Liam had threatened to harm himself at Halswell Quarry Park. Liam was taken to Christchurch Hospital for assessment before he was discharged. Mr Booth has since told the CDHB that hospital staff wrongly discharged Liam and took his word he wasn’t going to harm himself. The review said there was clear documentation as to why admission to hospital under the Mental Health Act was not thought to be appropriate. It said Liam was opposed to admission and the clinical opinion was not to forcibly admit him. But Mr Booth said staff then had the opportunity to get Liam hospitalised and the support he needed. The report said staff members were not identified as expected. Designs must be submitted by October 29 and all entries will be evaluated by an independent panel who will select eight designs for the public to vote on. The three winning designs will each receive $2000 in prize money before the gardens are installed in early December and remain in the Square for three or four months. “Good things come in small packages and we think these pop-up gardens have the potential to make a big impact in the Square so show us something eye-catching, something we haven’t seen before,’’ Ms Ingles said. The pop-up gardens will measure just 3m x 4m and will need to be transported in sections and easily assembled on site.
