Thrilling team game<br />
proving popular in<br />
Christchurch<br />
An exciting team game that originated<br />
some 10 years ago in Japan and expanded<br />
to Taiwan, where it was called “survivor<br />
game”, is attracting increasing numbers of<br />
players around the world, including New<br />
Zealand.<br />
Called Airsoft, it is similar in concept<br />
to Paintball, except that players are often<br />
not visibly marked when hit with the soft<br />
plastic pellets.<br />
“Because it doesn’t leave paint marks<br />
on the players, it is cleaner, more effective<br />
and also costs less,” says Joseph Hsieh, who<br />
operates Christchurch’s Unlimited Airsoft<br />
Shop at Middleton and indoor arena, Zone<br />
67, in Woolston.<br />
“However,” he adds, “you still need good<br />
safety glasses or a face mask to enjoy the<br />
game without harm.”<br />
As a team game, it can be played by teams<br />
of two right up to teams of 200, Joseph says,<br />
with some players seeing it as a competitive<br />
sport, and others approaching it as a form<br />
of military training and dressing in combat<br />
gear.<br />
“At Zone 67 we welcome both playing<br />
styles and host both styles of events,” he<br />
says.<br />
For competition,<br />
games usually last<br />
10 to 20 minutes and<br />
have a score system. For<br />
military simulation, players usually have<br />
objectives to achieve, and the games can<br />
last for a few hours, even up to a full day.<br />
Airsoft is ideal as a team-building<br />
exercise, Joseph says, and there are many<br />
Christchurch companies that play at Zone<br />
67 for this purpose.<br />
“Gear is available for hire at Zone 67,<br />
and we have the latest technology in guns<br />
and gear so people can get maximum<br />
enjoyment from the game.”<br />
Regular players can purchase gear at the<br />
Unlimited Airsoft Shop in Annex Road<br />
Middleton, where owner Joseph, who is<br />
originally from Taiwan, is knowledgeable<br />
on all aspects of Airsoft and carries the<br />
latest products. While most customers are<br />
Airsoft players, there are also collectors,<br />
re-enactors, military trainers, police and<br />
others that purchase products there.<br />
To play with hired gear at Zone 67 the<br />
cost is $35 per person; players with their<br />
own gear pay $25 per session.<br />
