UNLIMITED AIRSOFT
The Star
Thrilling team game
proving popular in
Christchurch
An exciting team game that originated
some 10 years ago in Japan and expanded
to Taiwan, where it was called “survivor
game”, is attracting increasing numbers of
players around the world, including New
Zealand.
Called Airsoft, it is similar in concept
to Paintball, except that players are often
not visibly marked when hit with the soft
plastic pellets.
“Because it doesn’t leave paint marks
on the players, it is cleaner, more effective
and also costs less,” says Joseph Hsieh, who
operates Christchurch’s Unlimited Airsoft
Shop at Middleton and indoor arena, Zone
67, in Woolston.
“However,” he adds, “you still need good
safety glasses or a face mask to enjoy the
game without harm.”
As a team game, it can be played by teams
of two right up to teams of 200, Joseph says,
with some players seeing it as a competitive
sport, and others approaching it as a form
of military training and dressing in combat
gear.
“At Zone 67 we welcome both playing
styles and host both styles of events,” he
says.
For competition,
games usually last
10 to 20 minutes and
have a score system. For
military simulation, players usually have
objectives to achieve, and the games can
last for a few hours, even up to a full day.
Airsoft is ideal as a team-building
exercise, Joseph says, and there are many
Christchurch companies that play at Zone
67 for this purpose.
“Gear is available for hire at Zone 67,
and we have the latest technology in guns
and gear so people can get maximum
enjoyment from the game.”
Regular players can purchase gear at the
Unlimited Airsoft Shop in Annex Road
Middleton, where owner Joseph, who is
originally from Taiwan, is knowledgeable
on all aspects of Airsoft and carries the
latest products. While most customers are
Airsoft players, there are also collectors,
re-enactors, military trainers, police and
others that purchase products there.
To play with hired gear at Zone 67 the
cost is $35 per person; players with their
own gear pay $25 per session.
Zone 67 is located at
67 Kennaway Road, Woolston
and is open seven days a week.
The Unlimited Airsoft Shop is
located at 249a Annex Rd, and
is open Monday to Saturday.
