Helping
Christchurch Grow
population and what that might look like.
New Zealand’s population is getting
older and a plan is needed to address
this, not just for today’s seniors but for
the seniors of tomorrow. The Positive
Ageing Strategy was released in 2001. Since
then the population has grown by over a
million, and the number of people aged
65+ has increased by almost two thirds.
Today, around 750,000 New Zealanders
have had their 65th birthday. By 2038 this
is likely to be over 1.3 million people. The
next generation of older people will live
longer, be healthier, more skilled and more
educated. They are much more likely to
remain in the workforce – and to want to.
The country will be much more diverse,
with an increasing proportion of older
people who are Māori, Pacific or Asian.
Throughout the regions and communities,
they will need to anticipate not only an older
growing population, but fewer younger
people. That’s why we need a new strategy.
But we need more than a “whole- ofgovernment
approach”. We need everyone
– government, local government, nongovernmental
organisations, communities,
whānau, family, individuals, and businesses
– to work together. We need a new strategy
to assist us to respond effectively to our
ageing population; a strategy that will help
us to achieve better outcomes for older
New Zealanders. Check out the discussion
Keeping you safe
for 70 years
Celebrating its 70th year Safe R Brakes
has a well-known and trusted name in
Christchurch and its 12 staff lay claim to a
total of 200 years of experience.
Owners John and Annette Begg, who
bought Safe R Brakes in 2016, continue its
tradition as a specialist brake repairer and
parts supplier as they grow the business.
Last year a tyre service was added, Safe
R Tyres. “We noticed that there were a
number of cars that were coming into the
workshop which had failed their brake
warrants but had also failed on tyres. So
it made sense to be able to offer to fit new
tyres while we were doing the brakes.”
Loneliness has become a bit of a public
issue recently, although people generally
think of it as a problem for senior New
Zealanders, actually it isn’t. Loneliness
actually decreases as people get older
(11.3% of people aged 48-59 felt lonely,
compared to 6.6% aged 79-90). But
loneliness (a lack of quality and closeness
in relationships) and isolation (where
people simply don’t have relationships) are
still major issues for older people and the
SuperGold Card has some solutions which
can be read online at their website.
John says “Specialisation is the way of the
future, not just the past. We have a fantastic
customer base, which includes servicing
car enthusiasts, motorhomes and small
commercial vehicles”.
“We’re known for our highly skilled
and knowledgeable staff that are able to
diagnose and fix just about anything brakes.
If it’s machining drums and rotors, relining
shoes, rebuilding cables, reconditioning
brake hydraulics, custom manufacture of
brake pipes and hoses; it all comes through
here.”
A big part of the business is supplying
brake parts. With a massive inventory of
over 7,000 parts, some dating back to the
1950s and 60s, the company is well known
as the go-to place especially for hard-tofind
items.
Contact Safe R Brakes today to ensure
that your car’s braking, tyre & suspension
system is safe and will not fail you… Don’t
