Stunning
CANTERBURY’S new
assistant cricket coach
Dion Ebrahim brings a lot
more than just experience
on the cricket field in his
pursuit to develop the next
generation of cricketers.
His life experience
ranges from the highs of
helping Zimbabwe to a
famous test victory over
India, to being arrested
over contract issues in
the Mugabe-led southern
African country.
During Ebrahim’s time
with the Zimbabwe national
team from 2001 to
2005 he experienced two
very different eras.
When he cracked the
side in April 2001 he joined
near the end of Zimbabwe’s
golden era. A famous
test win against India and
home and away series wins
over Bangladesh were
part of his first year in the
team that contained the
likes of Andy Flower and
Heath Streak who would
have been walk-ins for any
international side at the
time.
However, things quickly
took a turn. During
Zimbabwe’s opening
match of the 2013 World
Cup, Flower and Henry
Olonga walked onto the
ground wearing black
armbands to “mourn the
death of democracy in
BACKGROUND: New Canterbury men’s
assistant coach Dion Ebrahim represented
Zimbabwe at test and ODI level from 2001-
2005.
Zimbabwe.” Both were
immediately dismissed
from the team and applied
for political asylum
overseas.
By 2005 the political
unrest in Zimbabwe
had led to the cricket
team’s players being
owed match fees for
three series and six
months of unpaid wages.
At this stage Ebrahim
was the players’
representative on the
players’ association
and was involved in
discussions with the
Zimbabwe Cricket board
where they offered new
contracts which Ebrahim
described as “ludicrous.”
Canty contingent among
favourites for U26 title
THERE IS a strong
Canterbury contingent
keen to make sure the
Burnside under-26 singles
bowls title does not go to
another region when it gets
under way tomorrow.
The tournament, which
highlights the cream of
New Zealand’s lawn bowls
emerging crop, will be
played at the Burnside Club
will finish on Sunday.
There are 13 current or
former New Zealand representatives
in the 32-strong
field.
Burnside’s Tayla Bruce,
who won this tournament
in 2015, represented New
Zealand at the Gold Coast
Commonwealth Games as
lead in the women’s triples
and fours.
She was awarded her first
international cap as a Black
Jack as a 19-year-old.
The 23-year-old Roydvale
Primary School teacher
has a successful record at
club, centre, national and
international level.
Bruce has the experience
and skill to repeat that
memorable win.
Another Burnside player
with strong credentials
for success is 22-year-old
Richard Hocking who was
runner-up in 2016.
Hocking was last year’s
Bowls New Zealand
development player of the
year.
He has enjoyed success
with the Canterbury senior
men’s team and in January
won the Stewart Buttar
Burnside invitation pairs
with Mike Small.
The Bassett siblings,
Cait (Burnside) and Mat
(Elmwood), and Liam
Eathorne (Riccarton
Racecourse) are all more
than capable of finishing
high up the prize list.
Other Cantabrians
are Courtney Bolger
(Rangiora) and Dylan
Campbell (Woolston Park)
who are new to this event
as well as Shaun Aynsley
(Parklands).
Gore’s Sheldon
Bagrie-Howley, the 2016
champion, will be one to
watch.
The form of Stokes Valley’s
Seamus Curtin will
be followed with great
interest.
The 18-year-old has
had a stellar year starting
at the 2018 National
Bowls Championships in
Dunedin where he reached
the semi-final of the men’s
singles and the final of the
fours.
Bowls New Zealand has
confirmed it will be sending
a talent scout to the
tournament.
