Big challenge for Villa at nationals

VILLA MARIA College aims to
prove South Island schools can
match it with their North Island
counterparts at the national
secondary schools’ netball
competition.
Villa won the South Island
title for the first time in 10 years
last month but will face a sterner
test at the national competition
which starts today in Timaru
and finishes on Friday.
The team will face Wellington
East Girls’ College, Mount
Albert Grammar and St Hilda’s
Collegiate in pool play.
Coach Helen Mahon-Stroud
said the team is capable of
matching it with any opposition.
“We want the girls to focus on
their performance and not be
overawed by what they come up
against,” she said.
The team has had two training
games against Christchurch
Girls’ High over the past

fortnight. “Obviously, with the
club season being over, we’ve had
to find ways to keep ourselves
mentally stimulated since the
season has gone longer.”
Mahon-Stroud said she
believes her team will have to
adjust to the size and physicality
of the North Island school teams.

the experienced core of the team
and were all named in the South
Island tournament team.
She said the team has been
playing against “seasoned adult
club players” throughout the year
as preparation.
“I think if the team can focus
on their goals and what they
want to achieve, the results will
be favourable,” she said.
“Obviously, this will be a
massive step up for the girls, but
with four of the team leaving and
looking to continue their netball
at a higher level next year, and
for our year 12s, I have no doubt
they all will be better players for
this experience.”

CBHS claim
team time trial
at NZ champs

CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High
upset their rivals to claim the
prestigious Sir Bernard Fegusson
Trophy at the New Zealand
road cycling championships last
week.
The CBHS team won the
trophy by taking out the
under-20 national time trial at
Loburn.
The 51st edition of the
championships drew 601 riders
from 100 schools over the threeday
competition.
As well as the team time
trial, it included road and points
races.
It was the first time the event
has been staged in the South
Island.
CBHS’s Laurence Pithie,
Griffyn Spencer, Josh Rivett,
Logan Currie and Guy Yarrell
crossed the finish line 11sec
ahead of Palmerston North Boys’
High School, with defending
champions Auckland Grammar
School in third.
CBHS teacher and team
manager Gary McNaughton said
the team were motivated to do
well in their home region.
“We went out and rode the
course two weeks ago and felt
confident we could do well. The
guys have given it everything in
their last few training sessions,”
he said.
“We have a few guys peaking
as their final preparation
before representing New
Zealand at the Oceania track
championships in Adelaide
which start (tomorrow).”
