Firearms-related arrest and charges
On September 29, 2018, members of the “F” Division
Crime Reduction Teams (CRTs), North Battleford Municipal
GIS and North Battleford RCMP, arrested three
suspects who were wanted for various criminal offences.
Around 8:00 p.m. a member of the Crime Reduction
Team observed a male, known to be wanted for serious
firearms-related offences, enter a vehicle and leave a
property in North Battleford. RCMP attempted a traffic
stop and the vehicle began to accelerate and flee from
police. RCMP members initiated a monitored pursuit
which ended approximately 10 kilometres west of North
Battleford on Highway 16 after the subject vehicle
struck an RCMP police vehicle. The vehicle became
un-driveable and three occupants fled on foot. They
were apprehended a short time later. RCMP located a
loaded handgun a short distance from where the suspects
were taken into custody.
Two occupants from the suspect vehicle were assessed
by paramedics and released into police custody. The
driver of the vehicle, 24-year-old, Norman Percy Bird,
along with a male youth and female youth, are now
facing multiple charges. At the time of the incident, all
three individuals were on warrant status. All three subjects
have been remanded for court in North Battleford
on October 1, 2018 in North Battleford. Norman Percy
Bird is facing a total of 45 charges resulting from a
number of police investigations. The two youths cannot
be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. This
investigation remains ongoing.
RCMP REPORT
Last Mountain Times • Monday, October 8, 2018 • lmtimes.ca
At approximately 8:40 am on October 1, an RCMP
member had stopped a vehicle along Hwy 40, 10 miles
West of Richard. The officer had the vehicle stopped
along the road. At one point the adult male driver fled in
the vehicle, turned around and tried to run the member
down who was still outside of the police vehicle.
The member was struck and suffered serious, but non
life threatening injuries and has been transported to
hospital.
Later that day, Battlefords RCMP located the suspect
vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on a grid road
north of Speers, SK. RCMP patrol vehicles set up at
strategic locations in preparation to utilize tire deflation
devices and disable the vehicle if required. The monitored
pursuit of the suspect vehicle was limited to grid
roads in the area northwest of Speers and then west of
Whitkow.
The adult male driving the White Ford F350 was
driving erratically and avoided tire deflation devices
twice. Several police vehicles were struck and damaged
while the suspect was evading arrest. RCMP members
continued the pursuit on the grid roads where there
was little to no traffic and the risk to public safety was
deemed low.
A third attempt to immobilize the vehicle resulted in
the deflation of one tire, however the suspect continued
to drive on three tires. The suspect managed to get
onto Highway 4 and headed north toward the village of
Cochin. At this point, due to the increased risk to the
public, the pursuit was discontinued.
A number of other police vehicles were able to locate
the suspect vehicle as it entered Cochin. The suspect
drove into a local gas station, fled from the damaged
truck and then attempted to steal another vehicle. However,
RCMP members arrived on scene and quickly arrested
the suspect. A 37-year-old male from Lloydminster
is currently in custody at Battlefords Detachment.
The vehicle the suspect was operating has been linked
to a theft from Lloydminster, AB the previous day. The
investigation into this incident is ongoing.
The RCMP member was treated in hospital in North
Battleford for non-life threatening injuries and has been
released.
Theft of fuel
The Greenwater RCMP and Crime Stoppers are seeking
assistance from the public in solvinga crime which
happened near Rose Valley, Saskatchewan. Between
September 23 and September 25, 2018, approximately
800 litres of dyed diesel were stolen from a combine
and swather parked at a land location in the RM of Kelvington.
The Greenwater RCMP continue their investigation.
Fatal collision near Meadow Lake
On Sunday, September 30, 2018, at approximately
4:15 p.m., Meadow Lake RCMP, along with Meadow
Lake EMS and the Meadow Lake Fire Department
responded to a two vehicle motor vehicle collision on
Highway 55 approximately eight kilometres east of
Meadow Lake. The driver and loan occupant of a west
bound vehicle, a 41 year-old male from Meadow Lake,
was transported to hospital where he was pronounced
deceased. As a precaution, three occupants from the
east bound vehicle were also transported to and treated
at hospital and have since been released.
Initial investigation has determined that the west
bound vehicle went into the east bound lane while
travelling. Both vehicles ended up in the ditch south of
the road and the west bound vehicle rolled. The Meadow
Lake RCMP along with an RCMP Collision Reconstructionist
are continuing to investigate.
Fatal two-vehicle collision
At approximately 2:20 p.m. on October 1, 2018, Blaine
Lake RCMP, Shellbrook RCMP, Leask Fire, and local
EMS responded to a two vehicle collision on township
road #454 in the RM of Leask.
Initial investigation has determined that a pickup
truck travelling northbound collided with another
pickup truck heading westbound. The driver of the
northbound truck was seriously injured and transported
to hospital in Prince Albert. The passenger of the
northbound truck was declared deceased at the scene.
The driver of the westbound truck sustained what are
described as life threatening injuries and has been
transported to hospital in Saskatoon. This collision is
under investigation with the assistance of an RCMP
Collision Reconstructionist. Alcohol is not believed to
be a factor.
Single vehicle fatal accident
Prince Albert RCMP responded to a fatal motor
vehicle accident at approximately 5:45 am on October
2, 2018. The accident occurred 6 km north of St.Louis
on Highway 2 South. Prince Albert RCMP and EMS
attended. Initial investigation has determined that a
south bound Dodge truck left the roadway into the east
ditch where the vehicle hit an embankment and crashed
nose first, ejecting the driver from the truck. The lone
occupant of the vehicle, a 39 year old male from St.Louis,
Sask. was declared deceased at the scene.
An RCMP Traffic Reconstructionist attended the
scene to assist the investigation. The cause and factors
related to the accident remain under investigation.
Stanley Cup dreams all over North America
There can be only one Stanley Cup champion next
June, but as the 2018-19 season gets underway, there
are high expectations in many jurisdictions across
North America.
With the off-season addition of the No. 1 available
free agent, John Tavares, Toronto Maple Leafs’ fans
have high expectations that they will snap the 52-year
drought that began the season after they won their last
cup, 1967.
With the acquisition in late September of all-star defenceman
Erik Karlsson, the San Jose Sharks have high
expectations that finally, this will be the season they
don’t experience any playoff disappointment.
With most of their stars returning, including the
sublime Alex Ovechkin, the Washington Capitals have
expectations of pulling off a repeat of their first Stanley
Cup triumph.
With Blake Wheeler’s signature on a new five-year
contract and the team’s young stars, such as goalie
Connor Hellebuyck and centre Mark Scheifele, one year
older and one year better, Winnipeg Jets think they
can take one step beyond the Western Conference final,
where their run to the Cup ended last spring.
With an unprecedented trip to the Stanley Cup final in
their first year in the league, the Vegas Golden Knights
see no reason why this year should be any different
victory-wise.
With Sidney Crosby still in his prime, and with the
knowledge that they know how to win the big games
(two Cup triumphs in the last three years will have that
effect), the Pittsburgh Penguins think they can get back
to the big stage.
Fans in Nashville expect that one of these years,
they’ll stop singing Close But No Cigar and change the
lyrics to something more upbeat. With skill at every position
(Pekke Rinne in goal; a slew of scorers; and topfour
defensemen to die for), the Predators are hoping for
a breakthrough.
Why not Boston? Why not Tampa Bay? Well why not?
Those two were among the five teams to eclipse the
50-win mark last year and there’s no reason why they
shouldn’t be top contenders again.
And that’s it, folks. The Stanley Cup winner will be
one of the nine aforementioned teams. If you’re a fan
of one of the other 22 clubs, sorry to burst your bubble.
Maybe next year.
Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times: “Back when
NCAA rules allowed it, Florida State football coach Bobby
Bowden took movie star Burt Reynolds — an ex-FSU
player and a huge Seminoles booster — on a recruiting
trip to Ohio to better his chances of sealing the deal. I’ll
pitch FSU to the player, Bowden told Reynolds, while
you sweet-talk the kid’s single mother. ‘Well, the kid
ended up going to Notre Dame,’ Bowden quipped, ‘and
the mother came to Florida State.’”
Sean McIndoe in The Athletic, on the Calgary
Flames’ off-season moves: “They made a blockbuster
trade and signed a big UFA, because this is a team that
absolutely needs to make the playoffs. Then they hired a
coach who’s never made the playoffs.”
Another one from McIndoe, assessing the Columbus
Blue Jackets’ coach John Tortorella: “A coach who
responds to adversity by throwing water bottles at fans
and charging into opposing dressing rooms to fight.”
Scott Ostler of the San Francisco Chronicle,
on the 49ers’ loss of QB Jimmy Garappolo: “The team is
rallying behind (C.J) Beathard, whom most fans — no
offence to the earnest and hard-working young man —
were hoping would function mostly as a potted plant
FROM THE
SIDELINES
this season.”
Brad Rock of the Deseret
News: “Boise State’s preseason
training regimen included lugging
100-pound bags of Idaho potatoes
up the stadium stairs. Cute, but
most offensive linemen lug 100
pounds of french fries around their
waistlines, anyway, don’t they?”
Comedy writer Jim Barach: “Former Major
League Baseball star Brad Lidge is now an archaeologist.
In fact, he was on the Dominican Republic expedition
that dug up Bartolo Colon.”
Barach again: “Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom has finished
the season with a 1.70 ERA. Which is even more
impressive considering he didn’t get to pitch any games
against the Mets.”
