Grove City officials have had a longterm 

goal to establish a higher learning 

center and offer advanced education to residents. 

That plan received a setback with 

the sudden closure of Harrison College. 

On Sept. 14, Harrison College 

announced its plans to close operations as 

of Sept. 16. 

“After 116 years serving Indiana, Ohio 

and North Carolina, Harrison College has 

made the difficult business decision to 

close operations,” said the school in a statement 

on its website. 

Though the for-profit college is largely 

based in Indiana, it operated a facility 

located at 3880 Jackpot Road in Grove 

City. 

“It was very disappointing to hear about 

the school closing,” said Grove City 

Administrator Chuck Boso. “We do hope 

this leads to greater opportunity.”

There is a preconception, says Jaclyn 

Reynolds, that achievement in the science, 

technology, engineering and mathematics 

field is primarily taking place in 

laboratories throughout the world. 

“We know that to be false because our 

lives are constantly being touched by 

advancements that are not just being 

made by scientists in labs,” said the director 

of communications for COSI. 

In order to try to alter that widely-held 

assumption, the science museum and 

research center recently announced a 

search to find those in the region who are 

making an impact in the STEM field in 

ways one might not ordinarily imagine. 

Upon hearing of this quest to find a 

local STEM star, officials with the city of 

Grove City knew immediately that they 

had to nominate resident Justin Walls for 

their consideration. 

“He is an ultimate craftsman,” said 

Don Walters, the city’s business and communications 

officer. 

The city’s first experience with the 

native fabricator took place a few years 

ago when they experienced a major issue 

regarding the Christmas display. 

“Our Nutcrackers, we found, were not 

capable of withstanding major gusts of 

wind,” Walters said. 

Knowing that Walls had something of 

a reputation for “funky projects,” chief 

building and zoning official Michael Boso 

recommended Walls for the job.

“He fixed everything and it’s thanks to him that we 

have these safe Nutcrackers on display each year,” said 

Walters. 

While the Nutcracker project was largely what introduced 

many in the city government to Walls, it was his 

recent and acclaimed work on an antique motorcycle that 

made them nominate him for the COSI STEM Star Award. 

As the son of an owner of a diesel shop, Walls spent 

much of his childhood helping his father and gaining 

expertise in how automobiles work. Along the way, he

developed a love for racing vehicles, particular vintage 

motorcycles. 

“Somehow it just became my passion,” said Walls, a 

2006 graduate of the South-Western Career Academy. 

Nearly 10 years ago, he opened his own business, 

BTTW (Built the Traditional Way), and has made a name 

for himself specializing in crafting and improving antique 

motorcycles. 

“It’s a really hard thing to get into, and not just because 

it’s expensive,” he said with a laugh. “You have to gain the 

respect of the old timers.” 

Three years ago, Walls was invited for the first 

time to show one of his custom bikes at the Born 

Free Motorcycle Show in California. His 1927 

Harley won Best Competition Motorcycle. 

“I thought that one was a little underappreciated,” 

he admitted. 

The following year, he was once again invited but 

turned it down due to time constraints. 

“It takes a lot, and a lot out of you, to build your 

own bike,” he said. 

Earlier this year, he was once again invited to 

participate and believed he had something truly 

special to work with. 

“A friend of mine had this old, very rare motor, 

and wanted me to build around it,” he said. 

Having always wanted to build a motorcycle for 

land speed racing, he decided to build a bike that 

paid homage to the 1937 Harley Davidson 

Knucklehead made famous for its unusual design 

and for racer Joe Petrali. 

Using only the motor and photos taken from a 

museum in North Carolina, Walls hand-crafted the 

motorcycle using new technology to recreate the 

rare parts. The process took nearly four months. 

The results, however, were something he never 

dreamed.

After taking ‘Best in Show’ at the Born Free event this 

year, he was invited by event sponsor Mooneyes to take the 

1948 Harley Davidson motorcycle to Japan for additional 

showcases. He has also been featured in many international 

magazines and is set to take the bike to Utah next year 

to race at the Bonneville Salt Flats. 

Walls said he has been in a state of disbelief since 

unveiling the motorcycle and was floored when he was 

informed by the city that they were nominating him for the 

COSI Stem Star Award. 

“To be recognized by the city you grew up in is pretty 

awesome,” he said. 

He added that he was honored to be named one of the 

first recipients of this award for his achievement in the 

field. 

“Our industry is sort of lacking, per se, because we don’t 

get kids as involved,” he said. “I think that by doing things 

like this, we can show what is possible in this particular 

field.”

Award, Walls will be a grand marshal at 

the first COSI Science Festival, which is 

slated for May 2019.

Harrison College offered associate and 

bachelor degree programs in business, 

health science, information technology and 

nursing. 

According to the statement on the 

school’s website, Harrison College is working 

with transfer and teach-out partners, 

including state governing bodies, to ensure 

each student has a pathway to complete 

their education. For local students, the 

school said it is working closely with the 

Ohio State Board of Career Colleges and 

Schools to identify transfer partners. 

The closure of Harrison College affects 

the Grove City Higher Education 

Investment Program. This program was 

adopted in 2015 and encourages students 

to remain in Grove City after graduation. 

The city program offers a loan of up to 

$1,000 per semester or $3,000 a year for 

each student residing within the corporation 

limits of Grove City, who attend an 

accredited higher education program that 

has a presence in Grove City. This included 

Harrison College, along with Columbus 

State Community College and Ohio 

Christian University. Franklin University 

and Ohio Dominican University were 

recently added to the program. 

The students who receive scholarship 

funds must reside in Grove City for three

Coffee with a Cop Day 

The Grove City Division of Police, city of 

Grove City and Grove City Area Chamber 

of Commerce will host Coffee with a Cop, 

from 10 to 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 

Tim Hortons, 2111 Stringtown Road, to celebrate 

National Coffee With a Cop Day.

for a unique opportunity to ask questions 

and learn more about the division’s 

work serving the Grove City community. 

The program expands the division’s outreach 

to citizens continuing the Grove City 

community policing philosophy. There is no 

agenda, just a casual opportunity to ask 

questions and share ideas over morning 

coffee. 

Coffee with a Cop is a national initiative 

designed to advance the practice of community 

policing and strengthen relationships 

between police officers and the community.

Investment Program, it is required that 

the student receiving the scholarship funds 

must attend an institution that has a presence 

in Grove City. However, Boso said in 

this case, leeway would be considered. 

“I would hope the city would be understanding 

of the situation,” said Boso. 

As for the Harrison College facility on 

Jackpot Road, Boso said it is a privatelyowned 

building and the city plans to reach 

out to the property owner to find out their 

plans.

Grove City council shows support for Issue 7

Grove City Council gave its support to 

the South-Western City Schools District. 

At the Sept. 17 meeting, council 

approved a resolution to support Issue 7, 

the district’s bond levy of 1.86 mills, that 

will be on the Nov. 6 ballot. 

In 2012, voters supported a bond issue 

to rebuild or renovate all the elementary 

schools in the district and build a new 

Franklin Heights High School. That was 

the first segment of the school building project. 

Now, the second segment begins. 

“You can’t drive by the new elementary 

schools without pride,” said Issue 7 cochair 

Larry Titus. “Now, it’s time to see

high tech and safe middle schools, just like 

the elementary schools.” 

The district is partnering with the Ohio 

Facilities Construction Commission to 

rebuild the four oldest middle schools — 

Brookpark, Finland, Norton and Pleasant 

View. The project would also include building 

an addition onto Jackson Middle 

School, renovating East Franklin 

Elementary School and completing some 

roofing and asphalt projects. 

The total cost of the project is estimated 

at $163 million. The state would pay $60 

million toward the construction project. 

The district will have retiring bond debt to 

offset the 1.86-mills generated by the issue, 

which would allow the project to be completed 

at no additional cost to taxpayers.

This is similar to the no new millage bond 

issue passed by voters several years ago to 

build the new elementary schools. About 

half of the core construction cost was covered 

by the state. 

According to school district 

Superintendent Dr. Bill Wise, if voters 

approve the bond issue, the design phase 

would begin in 2019 and the new middle 

schools could be open by the fall of 2022. 

Councilman Roby Schottke asked if the 

new middle schools would be able to house 

more students. 

Wise said the project would add about 

800 to 900 seats at the middle school level. 

He also said Brookpark Middle School 

would not be built on its existing site. The 

district is looking to move that school closer 

to the Beulah Park property, which is 

undergoing redevelopment. The current 

Brookpark building could be used as extra 

space if needed. 

Councilman Steven Robinette asked the 

College Fair 

The South-Western City Schools 

District will host the 2018 College Fair 

from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 8 at Central Crossing 

High School, 4500 Big Run South Road in 

Grove City. The free event is open to all 

superintendent if the new elementary 

school buildings have ended up cutting 

operational costs. 

Wise said the newly designed schools 

are geothermal. 

“Last year, we did not use natural gas to 

heat the buildings until after January,” 

said Wise. 

Wise also said the classrooms have light 

monitors so if no movement is detected 

within 20 minutes, the lights go out. 

“There is no question - our square 

footage costs are less,” said the superintendent. 

The South-Western City Schools 

District is one of the largest public school 

districts in the state of Ohio. It has more 

than 22,000 students and covers 119 

square miles in southwestern Franklin 

County.

Feeding America has declared 

September “Hunger Action Month.” 

The Franklin County Office on Aging 

takes an active role in ensuring that older 

adults in Franklin County have access to 

the food assistance services they need to 

preserve their independence and quality of 

life. 

Food assistance services are ones that 

address the needs of those who are struggling 

to either gain access to food or prepare 

their meals. Franklin County is a service 

rich community that offers a myriad of 

services to combat hunger and these services 

are a vital resource to older adults

of the Franklin County Office on 

Aging, through the Senior Options program, 

to provide both the connection to and 

funding for food assistance services such as 

home delivered meals and nutritional supplements. 

In 2017, Franklin County Senior 

Options was able to provide approximately 

673,000 home delivered meals as well as 

almost 275,000 cans of nutritional supplements 

for individuals over the age of 60 

residing in Franklin County. 

In addition to these programs the 

Franklin County Office on Aging also operates 

an Information and Referral line for 

older adults and their caregivers to connect 

individuals to the robust food assistance 

programs within Franklin County.

site or home delivered or supplemental

Thousands of people descended on the city of Grove City for the 39th annual Arts 

in the Alley event, which is sponsored by the Grove City Chamber of Commerce. 

Throughout the weekend of Sept. 15, dozens of vendors displayed their handmade 

arts and crafts while even more curious fans browsed and purchased said creations. 

In addition to the vendor booth, a kids’ play zone was also a popular attraction 

for families. Here, Jan Evans talks about her handcrafted quilt, ‘Men Chasing 

Kangaroos,’ at the quilt exhibit. Evans said the piece was inspired by her trip to 

Australia as well as her love for kangaroos.

“A Simple Favor” an 

unexpected delight 

The Reel Deal 

I want to get this complaint out of 

the way before I begin the review for 

“A Simple Favor” and it is directed 

Dedra Cordle 

at the studio who produced this film. 

To whomever it may concern, the 

marketing was pitiful and at no point 

should the person in charge be tasked with 

promoting a film of this nature ever again. 

It was clear from watching this film that 

this person or persons had no idea how to 

pitch the concept to an audience. In one 

trailer, it was billed as a straight comedy. 

In another, a thriller. At no point in time did it convey the truth of 

this film and that is one of ridiculous trash. And I truly mean that 

in the best way possible. 

“A Simple Favor” is a bizarre, off-the-walls (and rails) dark 

comedy with bite and wit. It’s one of the most entertaining films of 

the year and yet one of the strangest as well. 

It opens with not-so-popular vlogger Stephanie Smothers 

(Anna Kendrick) preparing to make feel better cookies for those 

low in spirits. As she’s readying the batter, she launches into why 

she felt it was important to make these particular cookies as she 

is struggling with the recent disappearance of her best friend. 

Flashing back to the weeks prior, we see Stephanie, who is generally 

viewed by her peers as an uptight, lonely spinster, signing 

up for a majority of the festive activities in her son’s elementary 

classroom. After hearing pointed comments about her lack of 

doing, well, anything else other than crafts, she tries to strike up 

a friendship with the mother of her son’s new playmate. 

At first, people think she is out of her depth for wanting to 

befriend Emily Nelson (Blake Lively), a rich and fabulous public 

relations manager at a fashion agency, but the two soon strike up 

a relationship that is equal parts supportive and stinging. 

As the weeks go by, we see them growing closer, and we see 

Stephanie begin to covet Emily’s life — her lovely home, her exciting 

job, her beautiful husband Sean (Henry Golding.) Then one 

day, Emily asks Stephanie for a simple favor and is never heard 

from again. 

Upon receiving confirmation of her death, Stephanie and Sean 

begin a romantic relationship. Shortly thereafter, she moves into 

their home and then strange things start to happen. Emily and 

Sean’s son Nicky (Ian Ho) begins to talk of seeing his mother, and 

then items around the home mysteriously appear and disappear. 

A haunting never crosses Stephanie’s mind, yet sabotage does. ‘Is 

Emily still alive?’ she wonders. And if so, why is she hiding and 

trying to frame others for her death? Or maybe Stephanie is not so 

innocent after all. 

From start to finish, “A Simple Favor” is utterly bonkers and it 

revels in the fact. There are twists and turns and while most of 

those go nowhere, they are essential to the messy plot. This film 

goes all over the place and the actors are game, particularly 

Kendrick and Lively. I’ve never been a big fan of Lively’s acting, 

but she is so good in the role of Emily. She’s the kind of morally 

ambiguous character I think most actors would love to play, 

though it would be hard to pull off. She does though, and it’s great 

to watch. 

Coming from director Paul Feig, who is primarily known for 

comedic films like “The Heat” and “Spy,” “A Simple Favor” is an 

unexpected, demented delight that was given no marketing favor 

from its studio. Truthfully, its theme and the general atmosphere 

of ‘What the heck am I watching?’ won’t be for everyone, but for 

those looking for an odd and oddly good time, do yourself a favor 

and catch this movie. Grade: B+
