Lt. Christian Gotcher, a Dr.<br />

Phillips resident and 2005 graduate<br />

of The First Academy, is serving<br />

in the U.S. Navy as part of the staff<br />

assigned to the Commander, Littoral<br />

Combat Ship Squadron One Naval<br />

reserve unit, supporting one of the<br />

country’s most versatile combat<br />

ships. Christian is a Navy service<br />

warfare officer serving under the<br />

reserve unit, which is based in San<br />

Diego.<br />

In honor of National Hispanic<br />

Month, which took place from Sept.<br />

15 to Oct. 15, the city of Ocoee recognized<br />

the rich and diverse culture<br />

of its Hispanic and Latino residents,<br />

who represent 22 percent of the<br />

city’s population. A proclamation<br />

in celebration of Hispanic Heritage<br />

Month was read at the Ocoee City<br />

Commission meeting. Motorists<br />

traveling on Clarke Road saw festive<br />

“Ocoee Celebrates Hispanic<br />

Heritage Month” pole banners along<br />

the street. Also, colorful framed posters,<br />

featuring Hispanic art, greeted<br />

visitors at Ocoee City Hall. The city’s<br />

governmental station, Ocoee TV,<br />

aired a six-hour series titled Latino<br />

Americans: The 500-Year Legacy<br />

That Shaped a Nation.<br />

from The University of Alabama.<br />

The Indian American Chamber<br />

of Commerce-Orlando’s ninth<br />

annual Awards Gala was a soldout<br />

event attended by prominent<br />

business leaders from the Orlando<br />

community. Southwest resident and<br />

IACC President Yog Melwani<br />

welcomed guests and presented a<br />

powerful year in review. The IACC<br />

honored Central Florida award winners<br />

in several categories. Among<br />

the winners were two Windermere<br />

residents, Rajul Patel and Prineet<br />

Sharma. Rajul was awarded entrepreneur<br />

of the year, and Prineet was<br />

awarded male business professional<br />

of the year.<br />
