The one did
not get away
Mr McCallum said in spite of
feeling a little jealous of his son, he
was really happy to see him catch
his first fish.
Mr McCallum said his son
could be the “good luck charm” he
needed to catch a fish himself and
planned to take him on his next
fishing trip.
Riley, his father and 5000
other children and parents faced
Sunday’s chilly weather to try and
catch a fish at the Groynes children
fishing lakes in Belfast.
Dozens of budding anglers
managed to catch some of the 820
rainbow trout released into the
lake by Fish & Game.
Rangiora eight-year-old Alana
Beeney caught a rainbow trout
almost as long as she is tall.
The event, organised by the
Take a Kid Fishing Charitable
Trust was in doubt after the weed
lagrosiphon major had infested
the lakes, with last year’s event
blighted by the weed.
However, dozens of children
were able to catch a fish this year
due to the efforts of Environment
Canterbury and city council staff
who managed to deal to the weed.
The lakes are open to fishing for
children 17 and under, adults are
not allowed to fish in them.
Views sought on plan for parks
•From page 1
“Essentially it’s similar to the
libraries issue. I like the idea of
libraries being a safe place,” he
said.
“It’s like we’ve seen up north
with parents using libraries as
dumping grounds to drop their
kids off for the
day. That’s not
happening in
Selwyn, but we
have to make
sure the bylaw
is there just in
case.”
Craig Watson
He said that
while dogs and
assistance animals would still be
allowed in parks and reserves,
other animals would not be.
“Our parks aren’t designed to
have horses running through
them and ripping up the
grounds.”
Councillor Pat McEvedy said
the bylaw hadn’t been reviewed
since 2009 and needed to be
looked at as Selwyn was a fastgrowing
area.
He said having locals submit
their thoughts on the draft bylaw
would allow the council to “keep
in touch” with the community’s
needs.
“We want the people who use
our reserves to have a say, and
CONSULTATION: Areas such as Foster Park will be included in the Selwyn District Council’s
plan to update its Parks and Reserves Bylaw.
it’s a good way of keeping in with animals on the courts, but
touch with the community.” we have a rule that mitigates that,
Selwyn Netball Centre administrator
Emma Cantrell said said.
so it’s not such a big problem,” she
while she thought reviewing the Ellesmere Cricket Sub Association
president Richard Clark said
bylaw was a good idea, but they
hadn’t had any issues at Lincoln they hadn’t had any experience
Domain, where they operated with troublesome animals or
from.
drones.
“We have had some issues “We’ve had animals, like dogs,
around the domain but we’ve
never had any problems with
them, the owners are pretty
good.”
Public consultation for the
draft bylaw opened on Monday
and would close on November 20.
The council is expected to
adopt the bylaw in February
2019.
