Now
Fire rages, homes at risk
weather
Remove any existing plants
and old potting mix and thoroughly
rinse and clean the container
(don’t forget the outside).
Being in a confined space means
potted plants deplete the soil
more quickly of nutrients, so
always use fresh, good quality
mix each season.
Roses
Apply side dressings of rose
fertiliser and mulch well around
rose plants. Regularly ‘dead head’
finished blooms to encourage
continuous flowering, making
sure you clean your secateurs or
clippers beforehand.
Have fun in the garden.
LEVEL:
The layout
of your
pavers
doesn’t
have to be
uniform
to create
an affect
as well
as being
practical.
TASTE: Remove last season’s herbs and plant out new
season varieties, including basil. Plant more than one of
your favourite herbs so you have plenty on hand.
Build a path using pavers
PAVING PART of your garden
will create an extra “room” for
your barbecue, a couple of sun
loungers, or a table and chairs.
Or, you could make a track
through your garden or lawn.
Work out where you want the
paving stones. An area with a
bit of slope is good for drainage,
but make sure it does not slope
towards the house.
Measure the area, in square
metres, so you can calculate how
many pavers you will need.
Allow five per cent more for
those you will have to cut to fit
odd spots.
Dig the area and level it. Don’t
recess it too much as the paving
stones should be above the
ground to stop water pooling.
About 10 or 12cm is the right
depth for foot traffic.
Build a thick base of gravel or
stone chip by putting one thin
layer over another compacting
each time (hire a plate compactor
from a hire company).
Put in edging restraints (buy
concrete edging from hardware
stores) to hold up a free edge of
stones.
Put down about 3cm of sand
on the top of your base layer of
gravel.
Lay the paving stones in the
sand and use the compactor to
settle them.
Measure and mark the stones to
be cut and use a diamond saw or
paver splitter (available from hire
companies).
Wear earmuffs and safety
glasses. Sweep sand over the
paved area to fill in gaps.
