Here are our top garden tasks... SELWYN TIMES Labour Weekend Hours Saturday 20th October: 8am – 5pm Sunday 21st October: 9am – 4pm Monday 22nd October: 9am – 4pm Sow some seeds Watching seeds grow and flourish is so rewarding and so easy to do. Use our Seed Raising mix to start them off in seed trays and then plant outdoors once they are a good size seedling. Remember to use the right seeds for the season, now you can grow carrots, lettuce, peas, courgettes, spinach, spring onions, beans, tomatoes, alyssum, daisy’s, lemons, marigolds etc. When planting out the seedlings, use our seed raising mix as a back fill, it contains a mini slow release fertiliser and Hydraflo which is a water management product. It will then continue to look after your seedlings as they grow, bloom and fruit in your garden. Safety in the garden Spring brings the risk of catching Legionnaires Disease if you don’t handle potting mixes and compost correctly. The bacteria that cause Legionnaires Disease are present naturally in the environment and there is no method available to eliminate the bacteria. So, we must work with protecting ourselves from the harmful effects of these bacteria, in much the same way as we protect ourselves from the damage caused to us by exposure to the sun. Below are some precautions you can take to reduce the risk of contracting Legionnaires. • Open bags with a sharp knife – away from the face - in open spaces, not in enclosed areas like sheds or greenhouses • Remember to use gloves and masks when handling the mix • Dampen any dry mix – being care not to inhale dry, dusty mix • Store bags out of direct sunlight • Always wash your hands after gardening, and before eating or drinking If you develop any flu-like symptoms after working in the garden head to your doctor immediately. Make sure you let them know you have been gardening and need to get tested for Legionnaires. Look out for signs of red thread, moss and grass grub and get on top of them before it gets too bad. It is also a good time to sow new lawns using Lawn Construction Mix, or repair lawns that have sunk, or have had 4-legged friends dig holes. Your lawns will benefit from a good watering every few days so grab a hose, sprinkler and water timer and let them work their magic on your lawn. Home-grown strawberries Fancy some juicy home-grown strawberries? Garden beds, raised planters, pots, hanging baskets are all great places for these wee gems to grow. If you don’t have an area at home to grow them in the ground, head down to your local garden supplies shop and grab a pot or hanging basket. Steps to sweet strawberries • Quality growing mix. Patio Plus is excellent for strawberries as it contains all the nutrients they will need to produce a bumper crop. • Strawberry fertiliser for plants in garden beds, or Topdressing fertiliser for those in pots, baskets or containers. You won’t need this straight away, but they will need more food through the season as they produce the berries. • Make sure you give the plants space to thrive. Dig a hole about 10cm deep to ensure the roots become well established and they can spread out to get the essential nutrients and water. Pat the soil firmly around the plant once in place. Put peastraw or mulch around the plants. • As the plant begins to fruit, you will want to put some form of protection over the plants to stop the birds getting the berries. Use a mesh or wire cover so they still get air, water and sunlight. The idea that you can make art yourself for next to nothing is not wishful thinking. So if you find yourself at a sculpture exhibition, or a garden festival, and you see a toilet roll holder bolted to what appears to be a concrete drainage pipe lovingly smeared in purple paint, don’t imagine you could do the same yourself. Just buy it and get it home to rescue that desperately dull stretch of griselinia. But before parting with your cash bear in mind: where you are going to put it; what it will look like when it is in place; and if you know when to say ‘‘stop’’. Art, they tell you, is very personal. Not so in the garden, where everyone invited around must suffer or marvel at your personal taste on show. It pays to buy not what your gut instinct says you love but what will gel best with the geraniums. Inside the house, most artworks would look acceptable displayed against a white wall but in the garden you could say you already have the art installed: plants are like a painted canvas. So the art you bring home is really more of a final brushstroke. Big lawns thus require fat installations at the end; intimate corners suit tiny trinkets and treasures. Therefore you have to first identify which particular spaces need what — the garden’s overall style and feel is as important as the size and aspect of the spaces inside. Resist buying the art while trusting you will find somewhere to put it. FEATURE: Busy pieces of sculpture look best in simple settings. Plywood cutouts in various settings will work well in particular areas. A dark corner may best be furnished with something bright and shiny, while another vista might be enhanced with a see-through work that comes to life in silhouette. If your haven is bold, funky and chunky you can’t insult it by asking a flowery teapot to stay. Busy pieces of sculpture look best in simple settings but minimalist pieces are strong enough to cope with a little more froth and flowers surfing around their shores.
