Stroke victim back on his bike
• By Anan Zaki
A KEEN cyclist and triathlete
Grant Cowan enjoyed an active
life.
But his world came crashing
down 18 months ago when he
suffered two strokes.
The former police officer and
father of two teenagers lost the
ability to speak, lost feeling in his
right arm and right leg.
Mr Cowan’s cycling hobby
came to a halt. He now resides
at St John of God care facility in
Halswell.
Having lost touch with pedals,
Mr Cowan’s family and friends
took him to the New Zealand
Bike Expo last week.
It was there, that they saw an
expression almost unseen for a 18
months.
Said his friend of 30 years
Rodger Wyatt: “The look on
his face, he was just absolutely
humming.”
“I didn’t know you could enjoy
someone else’s joy so much,” he
said.
Mr Cowan, 52, tried a
recumbent tricycle. The trike is
able to be ridden while sitting
down.
“I was just wrapping my brain
on how do we get this to happen
and get some public support,” he
said.
Mr Wyatt gathered two of
Mr Cowan’s closest friends and
former cycling teammates, Jan
Hales and Derrick Murray, to buy
the trike.
But the trike was $16,500.
The trio quickly hatched a plan
to raise money for Mr Cowan.
They will race in the Blue Dog
six-hour blast at McLeans Island
on Saturday, a race that the team
previously took part in with Mr
Cowan.
Mr Murray, who now lives in
Sydney, will fly across the ditch to
fundraise.
“We’ve got a spot for Grant,
he’s in the team but obviously he
can’t race,” Mr Murray.
“It seems like a very fitting way
to get word out about our mate,”
Mr Murray said.
The race at McLeans Island
brought back many memories,
Mr Wyatt said.
“We did a race together out at
McLeans Island as a mixed team
about four or five years ago.
“Grant came off his bike and
tore his leg open on his gear
leaver. It was pretty ugly.”
Mr Cowan was taken to
hospital and the team finished
second place.
“We still bag Grant now about
letting the team down,” Mr
Wyatt said.
He said Mr Cowan is aware
that his friends are trying to help
him.
“He knows he wants a bike,
he knows it’s going to give him
something to look forward to.
“I think he’s had a reasonably
dark 18 months and the look
on is face [on Monday] was just
extraordinary,” Mr Wyatt said.
Mr Murray just wants to see his
best friend mobile again.
“My thing is, he’s my best
mate, we’ve done so many crazy
adventures all over the South
Island,” he said.
“He doesn’t deserve to be in
a rehab facility, we just thought
we’ve got to find a way at to at
least come on a small ride with
us,” Mr Murray said.
He also wants to raise
IF EVER a guy deserved a helping hand it’s
Grant Cowan (see page 1).
Life has dealt him a terrible blow; two
strokes at a still relatively young age.
Now his mates have rallied to raise funds
for a special bike for this once very good sportsman.
I can vouch for Grant. My contact with him was in our
basketball team, many years ago now, but I can still see him as
an imposing figure under the basket. He was also a top bloke.
Grant was also a top martial arts exponent, went onto cycling
and as mentioned a natural basketballer.
His fundraiser is a worthy cause.
New method to beat midges
A NEW WAY of controlling the
plague of midges at the Bromley
oxidation ponds will be trialled
over the coming months.
The city council will be
disturbing the bottom of the
ponds where the midge lay
their larvae by mechanically
dragging chains across the pond
floor.
The chains will be dragged by
a boat travelling across the ponds
at a steady walking pace.
It is a control method that has
delivered promising results at
the Mangere oxidation ponds
in south Auckland, which has
also historically been plagued by
midge problems.
“At the moment the Bromley
oxidation ponds are the perfect
breeding ground for midges, so
in order to control their numbers,
we need to make the ponds
more inhospitable. We believe
that mechanically disturbing the
floor of the ponds is a quick, costeffective
way we can do that,’’
said city council three waters and
waste operations manager Adam
Twose.
“We will need to use the boat
on the ponds every 10 days for
about five hours. The result from
Mangere suggest that it should
lead to a reduction in the midge
population this summer.’’
SWARM: The midge population plaguing Aranui and Bromley will be controlled by chains which
will be dragged by a boat across the oxidation pond.
Mr Twose said longer term
there are plans to change the
engineering of the ponds so that
the inflow of treated wastewater
can be altered to create a less
hospitable environment for the
midges.
The city council is also doing
more planting around the ponds
to reduce the light from nearby
homes so that midges, which, like
moths, are naturally attracted
to light, are not drawn towards
them.
“It is going to take a while for
the plants to grow up to the point
where they make an effective
screen but in the meantime
we’re hoping we can provide
nearby residents with some
relief from the midges this
summer through the mechanical
disturbance work we’re doing,’’
Mr Twose said.
THE DANGER OF
FEEDING BONES
Hillmorton’s Lucas Rolston, 6, joined about 5000 other
children and parents at The Groynes lakes for the annual Take
a Kid Fishing event
With the popularity of feeding raw food
diets now, we are seeing on the rise
intestinal damage and blockages due to
dogs eating the wrong sort of bones on a
regular basis. Over the past six months we
are doing exploratory surgeries to remove
bones that have got lodged somewhere in
the gastrointestinal tract almost on a weekly
basis– often we see these patients late Friday
afternoon so they end up being operated on
that night and transferred to the afterhours.
All this costs a lot of money and is stressful
for the owner. I’m not saying all bones are
bad but I think owners have to be aware of
the pitfalls, research carefully the safer bone
options like raw meaty bones and supervise
carefully when there pooch is having a good
old chew.
In some adult dogs with no medical issues,
feeding balanced and complete raw diets
may be okay but we at McMaster & Heap
will never be advocates of feeding most
bones on a regular basis and certainly not to
puppies. Very occasionally feeding a large
RAW meaty cannon bone is great for teeth
cleaning and general enjoyment. I limit Lola
my Labrador to a raw cannon bone twice
a month and it’s binned after one hour of
chewing. Once I forgot to take the bone
away and after three hours she was still
knawing away and the pulp in her upper
canine had bled into the tooth. Luckily it
healed quickly and she didn’t need the tooth
extracting.
The nutritional value of bones is poor and
their complication rate high. Dental disease
is common and we will often see fractured
canines and dying teeth from the pulp of
the tooth getting permanently damaged
from continual chewing on a hard object
for too long. Again supervision is needed.
Gastrointestinal disease, presenting with
vomiting, regurgitation, diarrhoea and
inappetance is commonplace (especially
with the feeding of cooked bones ) as is the
dreaded and expensive to treat “pancreatitis”
patient. Baked or barbequed bones become
hard and brittle causing splintering and
subsequent piercing of the softer tissues.
And then we have the blockages, where
bone is “stuck” and can’t be pushed
along with peristalsis, requiring surgical
intervention – not a cheap option but a
necessary one if we are to save the patients’
life.
Now we come to my beloved “Henry” who
regularly loves to visit me and have some
sort of operation fairly regularly. We have a
close relationship now. In January he was
This is Henry NOT
allowed on the furniture
very sick with pancreatitis and hospitalised
for days, then in August on a Sunday we
surgically removed a foreign body from his
small intestine and very recently he got a
large knuckle bone completely stuck in his
oesophagus requiring emergency surgery.
He usually bounces back quickly from
surgery but this last visit he’s had a few quite
serious complications from eating bones.
The large knuckle was removed through his
pharygnx carefully with the use of forceps.
Due to the oesophageal damage he’s had
difficulty eating and regurgitation issues.
He also had exploratory surgery to remove
many sharp shards of bone from his stomach
that were not able to pass through Henrys
intestine. As a result of the regurgitation due
to the surgery and eating of bones, he now
has aspiration pneumonia which is holding
his usually super recovery back. Henry
has spiking fevers daily, feels listless and is
off his food – a rare event for a Labrador!!
He is currently taking nine medications,
four of which are antibiotics. He’s been a
daily inpatient getting intravenous fluids
to support him as he hasn’t wanted to
drink much. His owners are performing
coupage several times a day to help clear
secretions from the lungs. This is a bit like
physiotherapy on the lungs to dislodge
mucous and fluid pooling in the lungs so
Henry can breathe easier. He coughs up the
secretions in his airways and swallows them.
Suffice to say the latest update from Henry
is great news. He’s back home, eating
much better, off intravenous fluids but still
on a variety of medications. Pneumonia
will probably take three to four weeks
of antibiotic therapy to clear his lungs
completely. Henry was very lucky as his
owners will do anything for him and acted
quickly getting him to us. He’s certainly
worthy though of the love he has from us
all. As you can see from his photo, he’s one
“cool dude”.
The shopper service will run
three times a day, Monday to
Friday, on a trial basis for 12
months.
There will also be a new
school service (route
641) to Cashmere High
and Christchurch South
Intermediate schools from
Woolston and St Martins.
Earlier this year, Environment
Canterbury consulted on
proposed changes for public
RE-ROUTE: Public transport-users are advised to check their bus routes as changes to some
Metro bus services come into effect on Monday.
transport as part of its Long
Term Plan 2018-28, to help
address a financial shortfall in
the public transport network.
Other routes affected by the
changes will be the 107, 108,
135, 145, 150 and 535, all of
which were originally set to be
axed to fill a $4 million funding
shortfall in February.
The routes had the lowest
patronage in the city, accounting
for 2.3 per cent of all bus travel
between them. After listening to
public feedback throughout the
Long Term Plan process, a final
package of changes was agreed,
and the routes spared.
ECan senior manager public
transport Stewart Gibbon
urged people to check the new
timetables.
“The new timetables are
available now at metroinfo.
co.nz. You can also collect
a timetable from the Bus
Interchange or by calling
Metroinfo on 03 366 8855,” said
Mr Gibbon.
Among the key changes, the
135 and 150 buses will form a
new combined route travelling
to New Brighton via the new
Taiora QE II, retaining the
current connection between
New Brighton and Burwood
Hospital and allowing for more
connections across the northeast
of Christchurch.
Free bus for
Linwood
College
students
• By Ashleigh Monk
A FREE bus service will be
provided for Linwood College
students when they move to
the former Avonside Girls’
High site while their school is
rebuilt.
Linwood College will occupy
the site from the middle of next
year until the rebuild is finished
in mid-2021.
The Ministry of Education
will pay for a free bus service
to shuttle students between
Linwood and Avonside.
Linwood College principal
Richard Edmundson said his
“heart gave a leap” when the
ministry offered to fund the
service. He was also excited
about the upcoming rebuild.
“The buildings are a vehicle for
the values and what is important
to the community – that’s what
is at the heart of it.”
Ministry of Education head of
education infrastructure service
Kim Shannon said the bus
service would help “minimise
the impact” of the relocation on
students.
Veteran gardener wins another cup
Fire rages, homes at risk
The spring garden
competition has put some
of the city’s most beautiful
gardens in the spotlight,
with Northwood resident
Peter Lawrence taking out
the top award. Ashleigh
Monk talks to him about
what makes his section
stand out
NORTHWOOD’S Peter
Lawrence has always taken pride
in his garden – and moving to
a smaller section hasn’t stopped
him from winning a top garden
award.
Mr Lawrence won the Andrews
Cup at the Christchurch
Beautifying Association’s spring
garden competition.
He has competed “just about
every year” since 1974 and has
won the cup numerous times.
This was his first year working on
a smaller section.
“I was actually living next door,
but it was time to down-size so I
wouldn’t have such a big garden.
This is the first year I’ve entered
with this garden,” he said.
“I feel really good to have won.
There were some lovely gardens
out there.”
He said he has worked to get
the garden looking perfect over
the past year.
“Laying the lawns, cutting out
where the garden was going to
be. I had a vision in my head of
what it was going to look like and
it turned out really well.”
Mr Lawrence said gardening
was a “great past-time”,
regardless of the awards.
“It gets you out and the
neighbours talk to you, everyone
that passes talks to you,” he said.
“I’ll keep going as long as I’m
able to. I like a nice garden, it
offsets the house and upgrades
the area a bit. It’s nice to have an
area that people can enjoy.”
Parklands resident Joceylin
Ching was awarded a certificate
of merit in the competition for
her garden at 153 Royal Park
Drive.
After the earthquakes, the
former Dallington resident
scoured the red zone and rescued
a number of rose bushes.
She moved to Parklands
from her Cheam St home after
being red-zoned and the roses
flourished.
“I lot of the roses I picked up
from people who were leaving the
red zone,” she said.
“It’s great now seeing it all
come together, considering how
sick a lot of the plants were when
I lifted them up.”
GREEN FINGERS: Northwood
resident Peter Lawrence in his
award-winning garden with
his dog Roxy.
Christchurch Beautifying
Association president Ron
Andrews said it had been the best
spring awards since before the
quakes.
“This competition has been
well-attended over the years,
right up until the earthquake.
We lost a lot of gardens after that,
and it hasn’t been quite the same.
But we’ve had a record year – this
is the first time we’ve exceeded
the 40 or so entries,” he said.
He wanted to encourage more
people to take part in the awards
even if they didn’t have much
gardening experience.
“A lot of people feel they can’t
compete with some of the top
gardens, and of course that is
difficult, but we’re encouraging
people to come along, learn
to built up their competition
gardens, and we’re starting to get
more interest. Things are looking
really good.”
Seventhwave moves back home
Fire rages, homes at risk
• By Matt Salmons
WELL-KNOWN wetsuit
manufacturer Seventhwave
has returned home, bringing
its entire operation back to its
original Ferrymead site.
The company moved to a site
on Dyers Rd, Bromley, the day
before the September 4, 2010,
earthquake.
Managing director Sarah
Armstrong-Park said the refitted
shop opened on Monday morning.
She said the staff were excited
to move the manufacturing
plant, showroom and headquarters
back to the company’s
original home.
Sumner surfer Paul Zarifeh
founded the company in 1987 as
the Canterbury Wetsuit Company.
Mr Zarifeh died of
pancreatic cancer on
November 23 aged 60. Three
weeks later, his son Sam Zarifeh
died after falling from a raft on
the West Coast’s Landsborough
River.
The two were commemorated
by a sculpture on the Esplanade
which was installed in July.
Said Mrs Armstrong-Park:
“Paul was a lovely guy and even
though we weren’t there [when
Seventhwave was in Ferrymead]
HOME AGAIN: Sarah Armstrong-Park outside the Seventhwave shop in Ferrymead.
ourselves, it’s still like going
home. For our staff, who’ve been
here for a long time, they’re so
excited.”
Mrs Armstrong-Park and
Leif Park took ownership of the
company three years ago, and
briefly considered whether it was
feasible to continue manufacturing
locally.
“We decided that, really, that’s
what the brand is, keeping it
Sam died three weeks after
his father last year.
Kiwi. Taking it home really
aligns with that.”
She said the feedback from
the surfing community has been
positive. “Everyone’s really excited
about us coming back.”
Experienced basketballers
leave Cashmere High
• By Jacob Page
TWO OF Cashmere High
School’s most experienced
basketballers have ended their
time in the senior team after
a vastly different four years
together.
Tom Russ-Hofmans and Dylan
Mahon have been part of the
team for four years, along with
Nic Wenmoth and Quinten
Conner.
Tom, 18, admits his final game
for the South Island champs at
the national championships this
month – where the team finished
ninth – was an emotional
moment.
“It was emotional knowing
that there was no next year to
aim for,” he said. “These guys
have been like brothers to me
and to know we won’t play
together again was a little sad.”
Said coach Paul Conner:
“Games where (Tom) may have
struggled to get into the grove
early, as a coach you always knew
you could rely on him down the
stretch in the fourth-quarter,”
Conner said.
“(Tom) was happy to mix
it inside the paint he would
also use his soft touch to his
advantage taking the shot from
behind the arc.”
While Tom played more
minutes than any other on the
basketballers Dylan Mahon (left), Nic Wenmoth, Tom
team, for Dylan, 17, just making
it onto the court at nationals was
a victory.
Dylan played his entire year 10
season, but spent the next two
years recovering after “snapping”
his left anterior cruciate ligament
(ACL) twice.
The injury and rehabilitation
took him two years of recovery
time. “It was a hard time because
I still wanted to be part of the
squad so I’d turn up to trainings
and games and do an assistant
coach-type of role but it was
tough not to get out there and
add to my team,” he said.
This year he was back in the
starting five and helping his team
to ninth in New Zealand.
“Hopefully I can keep
playing basketball at club level
and see where it takes me,” Dylan
said.
Beating diabetes
SPORTS
• By Louis Day
CLAIRE HAMPTON managed
to overcome her type two
diabetes within four months
thanks to Sport Canterbury’s Be
Active programme.
Mrs Hampton’s blood glucose
levels dropped from 89 hba1c to
37 hba1c, anything less than 40
is considered normal, whereas
levels over 50 suggest someone is
diabetic.
“My doctor was so happy, she
sent me a text saying I was a
legend.”
Mrs Hampton now volunteers
in Sports Canterbury new
diabetes-specific programme,
which is run in conjunction with
the Diabetes Centre at Linwood
Medical Centre.
Mrs Hampton said the Be Active
programme gave her a new
lease of life.
“One part of the programme
is focused on well-being and
nutrition whereas the other is
all about exercise. I found out
through Be Active all the places I
could go for exercise that worked
for me. I did Zumba, line dancing,
thai chi, mall walking, just
all sorts.”
Mrs Hampton said the new
Cashmere Tech keeper in
under-17 World Cup squad
• By Jacob Page
CASHMERE Technical
goalkeeper Blair Currie has
been named in the New Zealand
under-17 women’s football team
to compete at the World Cup in
Uruguay.
The year 13 St Andrew’s
College student was one of six
Mainland players to be named
in the 21-strong squad on
Wednesday.
Other players who made the
cut were Marissa van der Meer
(FC Twenty 11, Middleton
Grange), Macey Fraser
(Waimak United , Rangiora
High School), Gabrielle Rennie
(Waimak United, Rangiora High
School), Jayda Stewart
(Waimak United, Papanui High
School) and Amelia Abbott
(Nelson).
The squad will depart on
November 3 with their first
game coming against Finland on
November 14.
Currie transferred to
Cashmere Technical from
Waimakariri United at the start
of the season.
When she began playing
football as a six-year-old,
she said she did not initially
start out as a goalkeeper and
actually spent a season playing
rugby.
“I used to watch my dad play
masters (football) on
the weekend so thought I’d
give it a try,” she said. It wasn’t
until she was 13 that she gave
goalkeeping her full focus.
“I’d always ask the coaches if
I could give it a go and I really
loved it when the goalkeeper was
away,” she said. “Eventually I just
did it all the time.”
Currie was also named
women’s goalkeeper of the year
at the Mainland Football awards
night this month.
CANTERBURY WON back-toback
Collier Trophy under-13
girls national hockey titles
at North Harbour over the
weekend.
The team won in dominant
fashion, scoring 27 goals in the
week-long tournament and conceding
just two.
What made their back-to-back
success more impressive was that
only one of the squad, captain
Keeley Hughes, returned from
last year’s victorious squad.
Canterbury defeated Central
Otago in the final on Saturday.
Canterbury beat Hawke’s Bay
5-0 in their semi-final, thanks
to two goals from Hughes and
Kaiyah Ratu, as well as one from
Holly Gilray.
First half goals from Mila
hockey trophy again
Hastie and Ava Croton earned
Canterbury their winning margin
by half-time of the final.
Coach Cathy Baker said the
team trained hard defensively
and emphasised their fitness
prior to the tournament.
“We tried to keep teams out of
our circle and that worked well
for the most part, plus we had a
goalkeeper who stood up,” she
said.
“We tried to prioritise our
fitness because after eight games
in a week that can make a real
difference for young kids.”
Baker said the past two seasons
have highlighted the level of
talent coming through in Canterbury
hockey.
Three year 7 players can qualify
again for the team next year to
attempt the three-peat.
WORKSAFE NEW Zealand
has b en a proached in a bid to
fina ly repair the potholes in New
Brighton’s Hawke St car park.
Coastal-Burw od Ward city
counci lor David East wants
WorkSafe to pre sure the car
park’s private owners into
repairing the potholes which are
a “trip and vehicle” hazard.
WorkSafe chief inspector
a se sment southern Da ren
Handforth said it may be able to
take action under the Health and
Safety at Work Act 2015, “as a
person conducting a busine s or
undertaking.”
Mr Handforth said WorkSafe
is aware of the concerns raised by
Cr East abou the car park.
“WorkSafe has completed
an a se sment visi to the site
and is engaging with the owner
to advise them that it is their
responsibility to manage their
risks a propriately.”
Different parts of the car park
are owned by various people
and the Coastal-Burw od
Community Board recently
wrote to them about its concerns
around health and safety.
Cr East said the bi gest i sue
in the past has b en ge ting in
touch with the landlords and
owners and ge ting them to
agr e to anything. “The board
a preciates that multi-ownership
of the parking space may present
a difficulty in co-ordinating
repair/resurfacing but felt obliged
to pa s these concerns onto you,”
said the le ter.
One reply has b en received so
far from an owner who is wi ling
to discu s the i sue. However, a l
the owners would have to agr e
to undertake work.
Cr East said there had b en
a “number of incidences” in
the car park of people injuring
themselves which had gone
unreported.
“I’ve always though that it
has b en quite amazing that we
haven’t had any serious a cidents
or senior citizens perhaps
tri ping in those potholes and
doing themselve some damage.”
He is confiden the new
a proach wi l bring results.
“I think the WorkSafe
involvement may prove to be the
lever that we are l oking for.”
New bid to fix potholes
THE PAPANUI-I nes
Community Board has taken the
rare step of starting a petition
to figh the city council over
funding.
Signatures are being co lected
in a bid to get funding for a community
facility in Shirley.
It comes after the city council
removed funding for the centre
pla ned for Shirley Rd, near the
intersection with Hi ls Rd. This
was the site of the former community
centre, which was badly
damaged in the February 2,
20 1, earthquake.
The removal o funding
prompted community board
chairwoman Ali Jones to threaten
to stan down, citing it as her “die
in the ditch” project.
Ms Jone said the board’s role
is to represen the community,
and by gathering signatures from
residents, it was fulfi ling that
role.
“One of the roles of a community
board is to represent and act
as advocate for the interests of its
community and this is what we
are doing. The LTP and a nual
plans are a l about lo bying the
council.”
THE OWNERS of Sumner’s Cave
Rock Apartments ar expecting the
Earthquake Commi sion to sign-off
on a se tlement agr emen this w ek.
Body corporate chairman Mike
White said the group had gone
into mediation with IAG and EQC
on February 20, and signed off
on a deal with IAG on February
2 – coincidenta ly seven years
to the day after the February 2,
20 1, earthquake. However, they
are waiting for EQC to sign the
agr ement.
“Given that EQC actua ly drafted
the agr ement, there’ l be no
problem with them doing that.”
The apartment suffere damage
in the February and June, 20 1,
earthquakes and were demolished in
late 2012. In 2016, IAG’s offer of the
difference betw en indemnity value,
$10 mi lion, and the sum insured,
$16 mi lion, was rejected by the body
corporate.
The mediation agr ement
prevented Mr White from disclosing
the se tlement amount, but he said it
involved the two parties paying “a bit
more money than they’d wanted to
earlier.”
“Doing a l thi stuff and
Mr Garth hopes t own a
Pupils learn about role of war horses
GR ENDALE SCHOOL pupils
have taken a step back in time,
s eing first hand what men and
horses l oked like during war.
The New Zealand Mounted
Rifles Charitable Trust president
Mark A pleton and member
Mike Donaldson t ok their
horses to the sch ol on Monday,
in a bid to educate pupils on the
sacrifice their ancestors made in
World War 1 and World War 2.
Mr A pleton and Mr Donaldson
a rived a the sch ol dre sed
in World War 1 uniforms while
their horses Tommy and Kruze
wore 1 0-year-old sa dles donated
to the trust.
The presentation is a prelude
to the Gr endale Recreation Reserve
Management Commi t e’s
upcoming Anzac Day service.
As a tribute to those who
served, members of the trust wi l
ride horseback to the service.
Mr A pleton said it was
important children were
educated on what soldiers
wen through during World
War 1 and World War 2.
But he said the presentation
didn’t go into t o much detail
and was more of a “show and
te l” to make them aware of what
the soldiers l oked like.
Children were shown the type
of kits horses were required to
wear in the war.
AN U PER Ri carton butcher
has proven himself to be a cut
above his Au sie rivals at an
international competition.
Elite Meats owner Corey
Winder was named in the a l
star team a the World Butchers’
Cha lenge in Northern Ireland.
Mr Winder and his team, the
Pure South Sharp Blacks, which
includes W olston butcher
Jeremy Garth, finished second
in the competition.
He said the cha lenge started
as a “transtasman test match”
seven years ago.
The preparation for this
year’s World Butchers’ Challenge
was intense as the team
members met in Auckland
every two months for lengthy
w ekend practices. Mr Winder
said coming second against 1
other countries was a “fantastic”
result.
“To get second behind Ireland
was a huge achievement and to
be ahead of Australia is an
even bi ger thing for us,” he
said.
But Mr Winder admires the
Australian team.
“Those guys over there
[Australia] are on top of their
game, they do a g od job,” he
said.
“And it just showcases that
New Zealand has got some
of the best butchers in the
world,” he said.
Mr Winder has b en a butcher
Board chairman Mike Mora
“You can just about guarant e
Mr Mora said he wasn’t sure if
Goodbye to Westview Lounge
e DnD Duo
THE entire west wing of the Hornby WMC
1 of an exciting two-year redevelopment
project commencing in November.
“It’s a major $18 million redevelopment
that involves the demolition and rebuilding of
half the Club’s current premises,” said Paul
Inwood, General Manager. “e main bar area
needed to be earthquake strengthened, so the
and create a multi-functional facility where
families can spend more time in a relaxed
environment.”
e new west wing, to be completed by the
end of 2019, will incorporate a large sports bar
on the ground floor and a mezzanine floor
above with a performance area and a cafe
opening out to a deck with indoor/outdoor
eating options.
Next stage, the current east wing main bar
will be gutted and replaced with a family
restaurant; indoor children’s playground;
corporate areas; and hall for the Club’s sporting
sections. Completion date for Stage 2 is set at
Choosing to live in a retirement village can be an
overwhelming decision. You want to be sure you
are making the right choice as there are several
things to consider. You can give us a call and have
a discussion about any concerns you may have
and our team will be happy to help.
What we can tell you is that becoming a village
resident can be a great new chapter and can offer
the opportunity to make a fresh start with some
like-minded friends. A retirement village offers a
community-type feel and atmosphere with the
benefits of still having privacy and maintaining
your independence.
