Playcentre a step closer to old site
• By Ashleigh Monk
BELFAST Playcentre is a
step closer to getting back
to its original site after a fire
destroyed the original building.
On Friday the Papanui-Innes
Community Board approved
a request to have two trees
removed from the centre’s land
on Main North Rd to make way
for a new relocatable building.
Belfast Playcentre coordinator
Julie O’Rourke
said she was pleased with the
decision as this was the second
time the playcentre had applied
to have the trees removed.
“They’re really average trees,
and we’ve asked to have them
removed before, so this was the
second go,” she said.
“When those trees were there
at our old centre, we used to
have rodents coming into the
building by climbing up the
trees. They were a real health
and safety issue for us, because
we don’t want rat and things
coming in.”
The playcentre had been
operating from the Spencerville
Community Hub since a fire
destroyed the centre a year ago.
The blaze started when
something was left on a hot
stove at a five-year-old’s
birthday party.
HOME: After its building was destroyed by fire, the Belfast Playcentre has been holding
classes at temporary sites like the Belfast Community Centre.
Ms O’Rourke said that while
she was grateful to be able to
use the space, it had affected the
playcentre’s roll.
“We haven’t been able to get
more people coming to the
playcentre because most people
are waiting for a building.”
“Some of the time we just
choose to go on outings, because
it’s quite hard for our parents
to actually physically get out to
Spencerville. So parents who
don’t have cars, it’s hard for
them, so that’s why we go out
so that we don’t lose contact
with everybody.” She said the
news that the trees were to be
removed would be “great news”
for the community.
“It’s been really tricky, but the
core group of parents have been
really determined to rebuild,
and everything I’ve heard
from the community is parents
are just waiting for it to be
rebuilt.”
She said there was no
definitive time line for the tree
removal, but she hoped the
centre would be back up and
running in time for the new
year.
PAPANUI RESERVE MURAL
Papanui High School is planning
HILL ST BUS STOP UPGRADE
Improvements will be made to
a Hills Rd bus stop after public
transport-users expressed concern
over the condition of the stop. The
Papanui-Innes Community Board
has approved a grant of $3200 to
install a new seat and road markings
to make the bus stop adjacent to
293 Hills Rd more comfortable and
accessible. The improvements will
also provide a clearer line of sight
for bus drivers. The upgrade will
remove two on-street car parks.
PLUNKET OPENING DELAY
The opening of the Redwood
Plunket rooms has been delayed
again. Work on the building was
expected to be completed this
month, but has been pushed back
to December. The building was
being repaired following damage
from the earthquakes. The project
was originally scheduled to be
completed in June, but was
delayed due to the discovery of black
mould.
