Former St Bede’s student
wins top architecture award
FORMER St Bede’s
College student Matthew
Durning has won a
prestigious Australian
urban design award.
His project, Brisbane’s
Fish Lane, won the
landscape architecture
award for urban design,
which was presented by
the Australian Institute of
Landscape Architects. It
will go alongside his earlier
awards, including the
Queensland urban design
award and the Queensland
minster’s award for urban
design.
Durning graduated from
St Bede’s in 2005 and then
completed a Masters in
Landscape Architecture at
Lincoln University before
moving to Brisbane in
2011 and then to Sydney
with landscape architect
company, RPS.
Fish Lane is a vibrant
inner-city laneway that
connects Brisbane’s
Cultural Centre and South
Bank to the suburban West
End.
It has 17 retailers,
including bars and
restaurants, plus 35 pieces
of public art.
Bede’s College student
Matthew Durning
with the landscape
architecture award for
urban design.
Durning said
because Fish Lane is
spread over four blocks
with a multitude of
private owners and the
council, the need for a
comprehensive stakeholder
communication
Year after year, the Pataka Country
Christmas Shop, located at the north end of
Marshland Road, warmly invites customers
to enjoy a family-friendly experience
leading up to the festive season, with
children having the chance to choose their
own Christmas
decorations from
their extensive
selection.
Housed in an
historic brick apple
coolstore and an
adjacent farm
building, Pataka
offers Santas,
snowglobes, musical
features, nativity
scenes and much
more – all of them looking right at home
in this lovely setting. There will be even
more arriving too, as some stock has been
delayed this year, so keep popping in over
programme was
paramount.
“Because we were
turning an unused space
into a dynamic, 24-hour
retail, hospitality and
commercial area, we
had to come up with a
bold design to ensure a
successful transformation,”
he said.
“We wanted to create an
element of surprise and
intrigue so decided to turn
it into an ephemeral arts
scape.”
The judging panel said
Fish Lane delivered a
highly-curated urban
experience, celebrating
Brisbane’s unique lifestyle
as an outdoor city.
They also said it
embraced four key design
principles. It created a safe
and legible pedestrianfocused
street scape;
desirable and inspiring
sub-tropical spaces and
places that are responsive
to Brisbane’s climate; a
canvas for sustainable
innovation and creativity;
and a venue for the local
economy to thrive through
distinct niche retail and
commercial spaces.
