Agonising
time for fire
devastated
couple
• By Anan Zaki
A RETIRED couple are reeling
after a devastating fire destroyed
their Halswell home on Labour
Day.
Derek Petch, 75, and his partner
Marie Musson, 84, had lived
together at the Alvaston Dr house
for 12 years. The fire started at
about 4.15pm in the rear unit of
the two-unit section.
Ms Musson was taken to hospital
on the day for precautionary
checks. Speaking the day after the
fire, she could not hold back the
tears.
“It’s just hit me, that’s our home
gone,” Ms Musson said.
Quake
survey a
bid to help
evacuation
planning
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
PEOPLE LIVING along the
Brighton coast line who evacuated
the night of the 2016 Kaikoura
earthquake are being called on to
take part in a research project.
Canterbury University is
aiming to survey as many
residents as possible to collect
data on the tsunami evacuation
response that took place following
the magnitude 7.8 earthquake
nearly two years ago.
Matthew Hughes, one of the
academics overseeing the project,
said the survey isn’t about asking
for opinions on the night of the
earthquake, it is about what
residents did in response to the
tsunami hazard.
The survey is part of a wider
research project led by GNS
Science and called Quicker
and Safer Tsunami Evacuation
through Agent-Based Modelling.
The project is looking at
tsunami risks and exposure in
Christchurch and Wellington
Dr Hughes said the data
collected from the survey is going
to be interesting in itself.
“But the really crucial part of
this is going to start informing
sophisticated computer modelling
of population movements when
they evacuate,” he said.
Eco-Warriors in national final
• By Anan Zaki
AN OAKLANDS School
team has made it to the final
of a national problem solving
competition.
The team, named Eco-
Warriors, entered the Future
Problem Solving New Zealand
competition in March.
They had to
solve a community
problem
and the
Eco-Warriors
chose to focus
on waste reduction
in the
Caroline
Martin
community.
The team
is made up of
nine pupils aged between nine
and 11 years-old.
Eco-Warriors coach and Oaklands
School deputy principal
Caroline Martin said the idea
was to encourage pupils to take
action in the community.
“We looked at newspaper articles,
including the Western News
and we just looked at issues in
the community. It was around
that time that supermarkets
were saying they were going to
do away with plastic bags,” Mrs
Martin said.
The team then researched on
FINALISTS: The Eco-Warriors team (from left), Ben Hanson ,10 ,Thomas White, 10, Isis
McKenzie, 9, Beatrice Christie, 10, Keisha Byrne, 10, Max McAlister , 9, Madison McKenzie, 9,
Aden Veint, 11 and Charlie Barnes, 10.
plastic, what damage it causes to
oceans and landfills.
“The kids decided they would
try to get rid of plastic rubbish
from our school and our community,”
Mrs Martin said.
Regardless of the result, the
team were proud to have made a
difference, she said.
“We cleaned Westlake Park
and are we’re now discussing
putting signs up on the park
explaining the birds in the area,”
Mrs Martin said.
The team also held rubbish
free lunchtimes, sold reusable
bags and held presentations to
educate the community.
The final will be held from
Friday to Sunday in Auckland.
To enter the final the Eco-
Warriors had to put in a submission
highlighting why they
should be in the final.
In the final, the team have to
create a display board, a scrapbook
and an oral presentation
about their projects.
If the team win the
competition they will qualify
to compete in the international
final in Massachusetts, United
States.
ROAD CHANGES LIKELY
The intersection of Annex and
Blenheim Rds in Middleton
may soon have a no U-turn
restriction. A city council staff
recommendation says that there
have been concerns raised by the
public about the safety at the intersection.
A city council report
said when motorists travelling
on Blenheim Rd towards Annex
Rd perform a U-turn, it causes
confusion for left-turning motorists
from Annex Rd. Main South
Rd could also get two no-right
turn and U-turn restrictions.
City council staff recommended
that the restrictions be placed
the road’s two intersections with
Harvard Ave and Green Lane.
The decisions will be voted on by
the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board today.
Consultation delayed
• By Matt Salmons
CONSULTATION ON the plans
for Mt Pleasant’s Scott Park has
been delayed until a decision is
made on the location of the Bays
Area Skate Park in December.
The plans were now estimated
to be out for public consultation
in late February, with a report
estimated to go to the Linwood-
Central-Heathcote Community
Board in April or May.
City council manager community
parks Al Hardy said work on
the park had been budgeted for
this financial year.
“The time line for the consultation
on the Scott Park landscape
plan will be impacted by a decision
being made on the location
of the Bays Area Skate Park at the
community board meeting on
December 3,” he said.
A site on Nayland St had been
identified as the most popular
option for the skate park during
public consultation.
However, Mr Hardy said that
if Scott Park, another potential
location for the skate park, was
chosen then landscape plans
“would need to be amended to
accommodate.”
“This . . . would add additional
time to the delivery of [the Scott
Park] project,” Mr Hardy said.
Scott Park working group and
community board member Darrell
Latham said while it was “disappointing”
to see consultation
delayed, “it is understandable.”
“I am very keen for the community
to have the opportunity
to comment on the completed
landscape plan as soon as possible,”
Dr Latham said.
He said he thought people
would be “delighted” by the improved
beach access, boat ramps
and walkways in the plans.
The landscape plan also included
tree screening for the boat
storage area, picnic areas and
improved car parking areas.
Redcliffs resident Jude Turner
Survey a bid to help evacuation plan
•From page 1
The models will simulate
people evacuating after a tsunami
warning.
The project involves a
partnership with Civil Defence
Emergency Management, the
city council and Environment
Canterbury. It is planned the
information
formed
from the
research will
be presented
in a series of
workshops for
affected coastal
Matthew
Hughes
communities
next year.
It comes
after confusion
following the quake, in which
hundreds were stuck in traffic for
more than an hour trying to get
to higher ground.
In the new survey, residents
will be asked how they knew
there was a potential tsunami
hazard, what they did when the
official warning went out, what
their knowledge of tsunami
hazards is, and how it influenced
their behaviour.
It will focus on residents
living in coastal areas in eastern
areas of the city, including New
Brighton and Southshore as well
as the Sumner, Redcliffs and the
wider Banks Peninsula area.
BIG PROJECT: Canterbury University is surveying coastal residents on how they responded to
the tsunami hazard following the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake.
PHOTO: REGENERATE CHRISTCHURCH
The survey also asks people to
draw the route they drove if they
evacuated.
“We want to map what they
did and try understand how
their prior state of knowledge
influenced that behaviour,” Dr
Hughes said.
He said the evacuation routes
collected from the survey will go
towards developing the computer
model, which will
help Civil Defence and other
agencies help with evacuation
planning.
Anzac Fire Station senior
station officer Shane O’Brien,
who was on duty the night of the
earthquake, said every fire station
in the city has an emergency
plan but the more information it
receives the better.
Dr Hughes said the aim is for
evacuation paths and evacuation
zones to be further informed by
local knowledge when the models
are developed.
The survey will take place over
the next several months and a
preliminary report will
be completed at the end of the
year.
bus priority improvements
We are planning to install peak hour bus lanes on Lincoln Road and Moorhouse Avenue
to improve bus journey times between Halswell and the central city.
The southwest of Christchurch is growing fast and we expect 35,000 people to move
into that area over the next 30 years. The bus priority measures we are proposing
will help to cater to this growth. We’d like to hear your views.
Made In Scotland
My Grand Adventures in a Wee Country
By Billy Connolly
All roads lead home. ‘After my knighthood was announced a
woman from the BBC came to Glasgow to interview me. We
sat down in a lovely hotel in a nice part of town, and she hit
me with her first question- “This must mean a lot to you, with
you coming from nothing? “I looked at her, and I laughed
“I did? nae come from nothing, “I told her. “I come from
something. “I grew up in the tenements of post-war Glasgow.
I am very proud to be working class, and especially a
working-class Glaswegian who has worked in the shipyards.
I come from the working class. And, most of all, I come
from Scotland. Scotland is a unique and wonderful place. Its
national motto says a lot about it- Nemo me impunelacessit.
A decent translation might be- ‘By all means punch me in the
nose but prepare yourself for a kick in the arse? I did? nae
come from nothing- I come from Scotland. And this book is
about why I will always be happy and proud that I do.?
Whiskey in a Teacup
What Growing Up in the South Taught Me About Life,
Love, and Baking Biscuits By reese Witherspoon
Academy Award-winning actress, producer, and entrepreneur
Reese Witherspoon invites you into her world, where she
infuses the southern style, parties, and traditions she loves
with contemporary flair and charm.
Reese Witherspoon’s grandmother Dorothea always said that
a combination of beauty and strength made southern women
“whiskey in a teacup.” We may be delicate and ornamental
on the outside, she said, but inside we’re strong and fiery.
Reese’s southern heritage informs her whole life, and she
loves sharing the joys of southern living with practically
everyone she meets. Reese loves sharing Dorothea’s most
delicious recipes as well as her favourite southern traditions,
from midnight barn parties to backyard bridal showers,
magical Christmas mornings to rollicking honky-tonks.
It’s easy to bring a little bit of Reese’s world into your home,
no matter where you live. After all, there’s a southern side to
No Spin
By Shane Warne
Everyone knows the story, or thinks they do. The leg-spinner
who rewrote the record books. One of Wisden?s five cricketers
of the twentieth century. A sporting idol across the globe. A
magnet for the tabloids. But the millions of words written and
spoken about Shane Warne since his explosive arrival on the
Test cricket scene in 1992 have only scratched the surface.
The real story has remained untold. In No Spin, Shane sets
the record straight. From his extraordinary family history to his
childhood as a budding Aussie Rules footballer in suburban
Melbourne. From the legendary ‘Gatting ball? to his historymaking
700th Test wicket. From the controversy surrounding
the diuretic pill in South Africa to his high-profile relationship
with Hollywood star Elizabeth Hurley. Nothing is off limits,
and Shane tackles it all with his trademark directness and
humour. These days an incisive, charismatic TV commentator
and analyst, the ‘Sultan of Spin? also lets us in on the
mysterious art of leg-spin bowling, revealing the secrets of
some of his deadliest deliveries.
Timeball tower reopening
• By Matt Salmons
SEVEN YEARS after being
almost completely destroyed,
Lyttelton’s restored Timeball
tower will officially
reopen to the public on Friday.
After sustaining damage in the
February 22, 2011, earthquake,
the semi-deconstructed station
was then damaged beyond repair
during an aftershock later that
year.
Only the tower section of
the 1876-built structure could
be restored. The $3 million
project started in July last year.
Heritage New Zealand director
southern region Sheila Watson
said the restoration of the
tower and flagpole was
finished in June, but the
area remained closed
as landscaping was
finished.
“Much of the work
was weather dependent,
such as aspects of the
stonemasonry and
rendering work. The
result is fantastic and
Heritage New Zealand
is thrilled to soon be able to
formally reopen the site,” Ms
Watson said. After an opening
ceremony, people will be able
to visit the site during
daylight hours, while at
night the tower will be
lit up. Flag displays will
also feature during the
year.
“As well as a great
picnic spot, or simply
to go an enjoy views of
the harbour, it captures
the history and heritage
Sheila Watson of the site through
what has been returned
and interpretation panels,” Ms
Watson said.
•From page 1
The couple said they received
countless messages of support
and were staying at a relative’s
home.
They only had the clothes on
their backs and a handful of
items firefighters could salvage.
“The firemen were bringing
pictures off the walls and
jewellery all out for us,” Mr
Petch said.
Ms Musson often sat by the
window during the day and
saw many people walk past her
house.
“People used to stop everyday
and stop and wave to me. I just
wish people could know that I’m
alright,” Ms Musson said.
Mr Petch said the fire spread
in a matter of minutes after a
panel heater that was against a
couch was accidentally turned
on by a child. The rear unit was
occupied by a young family of
five.
When the fire started, Mr
Petch went to the rear unit to
help evacuate a nine-month-old
baby.
At the time, only the couch
was on fire.
“I went to get a hose, and when
I returned, in a minute, it [the
Love of Shakespeare gets Ruby to UK
Globe Theatre
beckons for
Cashmere actor
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
THE WORK of William
Shakespeare hasn’t always been
a passion for Cashmere’s Ruby
Anderson.
But wanting to jump at any
opportunity to perform, she
was drawn into the playwright’s
theatrical work when she
took part in the national
SGCNZ University of Otago
Sheilah Winn Shakespeare
festival last year.
Now Ruby, 17, has been
selected alongside Christchurch
Rudolf Steiner School student
Quinn Kueppers to travel to
London to take part in an
intensive theatre programme
based around the Shakespeare’s
work.
The St Margaret’s College
student said since taking part
in the festival, she had fostered
“such a love” for Shakespeare.
In fact when she took part
in it again this year, she was
compelled to direct and perform
a piece from Shakespeare’s
comedy As You Like It alongside
fellow student Emily Stewart.
The work was recognised with
a range of awards in both the
regional and national sections of
the festival. “I think Shakespeare
for young people is dubbed
as non-relevant for people or
maybe not accessible to a young
generation but I think that
stigma is just so wrong,” she said.
She said the way his work has
lasted so long throughout history
is unlike any other author and
it is a testament to his work and
longevity.
Ruby and Quinn will join
24 students from around the
country in the Shakespeare
Globe Centre New Zealand
Young Shakespeare Company.
The students will travel to
London in July.
Quinn said just seeing London
will be amazing, but he is
SCHOOLS
looking forward to working with
the directors and performing at
the Globe Theatre the most.
They were selected from 48
students who took part in the
SGCNZ National Shakespeare
Schools Production at Dunedin
earlier this month.
The 48 students were whittled
down from 5000 who took part
in a series of national SGCNZ
University of Otago Sheilah
Winn Shakespeare festivals.
Ruby said she already has
a good bond with the other
students travelling to London
and is excited to work with them
again. “I am absolutely humbled
I have been selected for such an
opportunity,” she said.
Established in 1991, the
programme has seen 520
students travel to Shakespeare’s
Globe in London. The theatre
is a reconstruction of the Globe
Theatre which was built in 1599
by Shakespeare’s company Lord
Chamberlain’s Men. The twoweek
theatrical programme will
see the students take part in 12
rehearsals with Globe director
Tim Walker before they perform
for the public.
WHAT HAS BEEN SPENT
ON FOOD:
• By Anan Zaki
COMMUNITY board members
have chomped through just
over $49,000 of biscuits, candy
and savouries since they were
elected.
The biggest spender was
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board.
The nine members have
eaten food to the value of
$10,000.
That is the catering bill
ratepayers have funded for
community board meetings since
the election in 2016.
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board chairman
Mike Mora defended the
expenses.
He said
catering at
meetings is a
“necessity.”
Community
boards meet
every two to
three weeks,
Mike Mora
but take a
recess from
January to December.
“I don’t think it’s right for
people sitting for two or three
hours with hunger pains,” Mr
Mora said.
Mr Mora said the food was
also available to city council staff
members and members of the
public who attended meetings.
“Personally, I think it’s for
the wider benefit of everybody
who attends the meeting to
be able to have a sandwich, a
savoury or a bit of fruit,” Mr
Mora said.
Board deputy chairwoman
Helen
Broughton
was “shocked”
to learn her
board was the
top spender.
She said the
Helen
Broughton
board will
discuss the
food expenses
in two weeks.
“We’re going to have to have
a serious discussion – does it
continue at all or does it continue
at a lesser level?” Ms Broughton
said. “It’s far too much to be
spending,” she said.
Ms Broughton also said the
board never made it clear to
members of the public attending
meetings they could share in
the food. Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood
Community
Board spent
the least on
catering.
The board
only caters
for meetings
Sam
MacDonald
which have a
“substantial”
agenda or if
it is combined with other
boards.
Chairman Sam MacDonald
said the board decided early into
its current term that catering
meetings was not a good use of
ratepayers’ money.
“I think the reality is that in
any workplace, [catering is] not
something that’s readily available
or readily offered.”
Mr MacDonald said the food
that’s usually provided are
biscuits and lollies.
“We were just cognisant of
the fact that in the end, we
represent the community and
are outcomes focused
and we need to be mindful
with ratepayers’ funds,” Mr
MacDonald said.
A variety of caterers are used
by the community boards, and
sometimes the food is purchased
from supermarkets, city council
head of community support,
governance and partnership John
Filsell said.
Cashmere Tech win
under-19 tournament
• By Jacob Page
THE CASHMERE Technical
women’s team won the Coastal
Spirit under-19 tournament at
Cuthberts Green last week.
They beat Wellington United in
the decider 4-1 on penalties.
The annual men’s and women’s
Labour weekend tournament
attracted teams from around
Canterbury and as far afield as
Wellington and Dunedin.
However, it was Halswell
United White which prevailed in
the boys final with a 3-0 win over
Coastal Spirit.
Event co-ordinator and Coastal
Spirit co-coach Gary Bennett
said the 14 teams that took part
all enjoyed the opportunity for
some spring football.
WINNERS:
Cashmere
Technical
beat
Wellington
United 4-1
to win the
Coastal
Spirit
under-19
women’s
competition
final.
“We had players who were
after different things from the
tournament,” he said.
“We had players who were
going to carry on and play games
for the (Canterbury) Junior
Dragons, while others were
having their last kick around
for the season and moving on to
summer sports,” he said.
“It was great to have some
teams from outside the region
being part of the event and for
(Coastal Spirit) to make the boys
final was something that was
really pleasing.”
Bennett said the coaches also
found the tournament valuable
as they look to build squad depth
for the future across both men’s
and women’s teams within their
respective clubs.
DETERMINED: Masa Matsunami (left), Tania Butterfield and Kai Edwards all received medals at
the South Island Kendo Championships at Papanui High School.
Edwards wins kendo champs
CASHMERE HIGH School
student Kai Edwards upset
Masa Matsunami at the South
Island Kendo Championships at
Papanui High School.
Edwards won the men’s dan
competition over his good friend
Matsunami in spite of having less
experience.
The event also marked the 30th
anniversary of the Canterbury
club.
Edwards, who was an
apprentice with the New Zealand
team at the world championships
last month in South Korea, was
able to defeat the more
experienced Matsunami, who
competed for New Zealand at the
global event.
It was one of a number of
successes for the Canterbury
club with Matsunami and
Chris McGill combining to win
the kata event together.
Parklands’ Tania Butterfield
finished fourth in the open
women’s competition, while
Cantabrians filled the podium
in the open kyu event with Ryan
Hamilton first, Eric George
second and Martin Jiruska
third.
The Canterbury A team
of Jiruska, Edwards and
Matsunami were the victorious
team. The Canterbury B team of
George, Butterfield and Yuma
Tamaki finished third.
REAL ESTATE
You asked for it ... we found it!
103 Penruddock Rise, Westmorland
Auction: Thursday, 8 November 2018 - unless sold prior
4 bedrooms | 2 bathrooms | 2 toilets | 2 living rooms | 2 car-garage | 2 off-street parks | Listing Number BE193132
On a flat 938 sq m section, with
magnificent views encompassing rolling
hills, city lights and the Southern alps,
and all on a single level with easy drive-on
access; this Westmorland property has a list
of requirements we often see and can seldom
fulfill, with demand always outstripping
supply. The beautifully finished executive
home is spacious and well laid out with
multiple choices of living and entertaining
zones, indoors and out. With solar panels
installed to maximize the home’s fantastic
exposure to all day sun, it’s no wonder our
vendors are only reluctantly relinquishing
their much loved home to relocate north.
A centerpiece kitchen sits at the heart of
the home, with sleek stainless steel benches,
custom built charcoal joinery and 900 wide
free standing range. From here you can
preside over two separate living areas, the
dining room and three different outdoor
decks, not to mention panoramic views.
The design is perfect for family living
and entertaining with the areas able to be
separated off when required for a more
intimate feel. Each of the outdoor spaces
has a different aspect, making it easy to find
a sheltered spot in the sun at any time.
There are four bedrooms, the master
being particularly spacious, with walkin
robe and ensuite. Both bathrooms are
elegantly finished with extensive tiling
and modern wall hung vanities. There is a
separate laundry and a double garage with
internal access. Raised vege planters are
currently flourishing with home grown
produce, testament to the unique hillside
micro climate and just one more reason to
come for the views and stay for the lifestyle.
Open Home Saturday 3rd and Sunday
THE PAPANUI-I nes
Community Board has taken the
rare step of starting a petition
to figh the city council over
funding.
Signatures are being co lected
in a bid to get funding for a community
facility in Shirley.
It comes after the city council
removed funding for the centre
pla ned for Shirley Rd, near the
intersection with Hi ls Rd. This
was the site of the former community
centre, which was badly
damaged in the February 2,
20 1, earthquake.
The removal o funding
prompted community board
chairwoman Ali Jones to threaten
to stan down, citing it as her “die
in the ditch” project.
Ms Jone said the board’s role
is to represen the community,
and by gathering signatures from
residents, it was fulfi ling that
role.
“One of the roles of a community
board is to represent and act
as advocate for the interests of its
community and this is what we
are doing. The LTP and a nual
plans are a l about lo bying the
THE OWNERS of Sumner’s Cave
Rock Apartments ar expecting the
Earthquake Commi sion to sign-off
on a se tlement agr emen this w ek.
Body corporate chairman Mike
White said the group had gone
into mediation with IAG and EQC
on February 20, and signed off
on a deal with IAG on February
2 – coincidenta ly seven years
to the day after the February 2,
20 1, earthquake. However, they
are waiting for EQC to sign the
agr ement.
“Given that EQC actua ly drafted
the agr ement, there’ l be no
problem with them doing that.”
The apartment suffere damage
in the February and June, 20 1,
earthquakes and were demolished in
late 2012. In 2016, IAG’s offer of the
difference betw en indemnity value,
$10 mi lion, and the sum insured,
$16 mi lion, was rejected by the body
corporate.
The mediation agr ement
prevented Mr White from disclosing
the se tlement amount, but he said it
involved the two parties paying “a bit
more money than they’d wanted to
earlier.”
