BLOWING THEIR OWN TRUMPET MUSIQUE P resque aussi long qu’une trompette, le kabiry resque aussi long qu’une trompette, le kabiry (« grand » en arabe) est un instrument qui ressemble en plusieurs points au "zamr" du monde arabe. Il fait partie des instruments de musique traditionnels Antakarana, un groupe ethnique du nord de Madagascar. La provenance de cet instrument raconte en creux la formation des ethnies nordique où de nombreux immigrés arabes se seraient installés via les ports et seraient aussi venus travailler sur les nombreuses exploitations présentes dans cette région. Au cours des fêtes traditionnelles Antakarana, il n’est pas étonnant de croiser cet instrument aux sonorités fortes qui rappellent de loin celui d’une trompette. MUSIC Almost as long as a trumpet, the Kabiry ("great" in Arabic) is an instrument of the Arab world. Resembling the Arabic "Zamr" in many ways, it is one of the traditional musical instruments of the Antakarana, Aan ethnic group from the north of Madagascar. The provenance of this instrument outlines the formation of the northern ethnic groups, where a large number of Arab immigrants came to settle in the north of the island of Madagascar through its ports, and also to work on the many farms located in this area. During the traditional festivals of northern Madagascar, it is not surprising to hear this instrument played, with strong sounds reminiscent of a trumpet. Le kabiry est en bois léger ou en cuivre. Il est percé de 5 ou 6 trous et son bec se termine par deux petites languettes de papier d’où sort le son, par vibration. Au cours des fêtes traditionnelles Antakarana, il n’est pas étonnant de croiser cet instrument aux sonorités fortes qui rappellent de loin celui d’une trompette. Témoin du passé, il a donné son nom à un festival de musique dont l’objectif est de sensibiliser la population à la protection de l’environnement. Chaque année, pendant 4 jours, soit en juillet soit en août, ce festival culturel et artistique organisé à Ambilobe rend hommage au kabiry. The Kabiry is made of light wood or copper. It is pierced with five or six holes and its mouthpiece ends in two small strips of paper, from where the sound emerges through vibration. During the traditional festivals of northern Madagascar, it is not surprising to hear this instrument played, with strong sounds reminiscent of a trumpet. The instrument lent its name to a music festival, which aims at raising public awareness about environmental protection.
