Bulb Planting
October saw a round of bulb planting. Six
hundred native bulbs were bought by the
Council, including snowdrops, snake’s
head fritillary, wild daffodils and tulips.
The Horticultural Society kindly planted
some around the fingerpost and the Tree
Conservation Volunteers (TCV), headed
up by Cllr Tim Hills, planted the rest at the
top of Workhouse Lane, bottom of Cottage
Lane, Churchfield and opposite Church Place Farm on Westfield Lane.
They also managed to clear the brambles and overgrowth around four of the
‘Westfield’ signs coming into the village.
Poppy Making Workshops
This year to commemorate 100 years since the end of World War I, the Parish
Council organised a display of poppies throughout the village inviting residents
and community groups to get involved. In September we held a Community
Poppy Making workshop in the Bowls Club. Many thanks to the Bowls Club for
hosting us and thank you to all the volunteers who came along on the day. We
had a good mix of ages and a very productive afternoon of painting, sewing,
knitting, crocheting, gluing, tea drinking and cake eating!
I was invited by the Head Teacher of Westfield Primary School to go into the
school and run workshops with each of the classes. I started each class with a
discussion about the symbolism of the poppy and why it is important to
remember World War I. The children were very enthusiastic about the project
and worked hard, persevering with some tricky tasks. Their creations are
wonderful and a very welcome addition to the display.
Poppy Display
At the end of October we put out all the poppies that people had kindly made.
We had previously applied for a grant of ‘There But Not There Silhouettes’ from
The Armistice Covenant Fund. These were placed in various positions within
the parish. Toby Walsh and his team of volunteers once again did a wonderful
job of getting the war memorial ready for Remembrance Day and also placed a
silhouette by the memorial. Lots of hard work went into the display and there is
a long list of people to thank including: The Women’s Institute, Horticultural
Society, Playgroup, Youth Club, Cubs, Beavers, Scouts, Brownies, Guides and
Woodbase. Thank you to everyone who made poppies, contributed materials,
helped with setting up and the team at the New Inn for being a drop off point!
