T6 WEEKLYNEWS.NET - 978-532-5880 THANKSGIVING FOOTBALL WEEK 2 Tough trip to Danvers for Tanners By Anne Marie Tobin DANVERS — It was one step forward, two steps back for the Peabody football team, which was manhandled by Danvers, 30-3, Friday night at Dr. Deering Stadium. Dropped passes, costly penalties and a defense that couldn’t keep up with the faster, quicker Falcons added up to an ugly night of football. “We had our opportunities, but we simply didn’t play well,” Peabody coach Mark Bettencourt said. “We took way too many penalties, we lined up incorrectly way too many times, we didn’t read defensive keys, and we didn’t do a good job blocking. We knew exactly what Danvers was going to do. Our footwork was slow, but in the end penalties just strangled us. Every time we had some momentum, a flag was thrown and that killed us.” Peabody had no answers for Falcons’ senior quarterback Brendan Treacy and senior running back Matt McCarthy. Treacy threw for 230 yards, and completed touchdown passes of 47 and 54 yards, while McCarthy ran for 175 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Falcons racked up 345 yards of net offense, while Peabody mustered only 147. “We absolutely knew that McCarthy was their big threat, but we allowed him to control the game,” Bettencourt said. “The kids need to pay more attention to what we are doing and focus on fundamentals. They need to know their responsibilities and do their jobs.” Danvers served notice on Peabody’s first possession, forcing a three-and-out. After a Peabody quarterback Matt Jandrisevits takes off on a quarterback keeper during last Friday night’s game. 37-yard punt by Declan Russell, the Falcons methodically drove to the Tanners’ 9-yard line before the drive stalled. Max Leete converted a 26-yard field goal to give the Falcons an early 3-0 lead. After the Tanners turned the ball over on downs at their 49, Danvers needed only three minutes to make it 10-0, with McCarthy doing the honors from 9 yards out (Leete PAT). The Tanners let a golden opportunity slip on the next drive when, from the Tanners’ 22, quarterback Matt Jandrisevits had Russell open at the Falcons’ 40, but Russell couldn’t hold on. Another penalty on the Tanners on Danvers’ next drive set up the next Falcons touchdown -- a 45-yard strike from Treacy to McCarthy (Leete PAT) to make it 17-0. The Tanners finally broke the ice when Austin Leggett nailed a 40-yard field goal to end the half. “The one good thing is knowing that we have Austin as a field goal option in situations like that when we needed to put points on the board,” said Bettencourt. It went from bad to worse in the second half for Peabody, which put up only 46 yards of offense, all of them (and 36 on one rush by Angel Paulino) coming on the game’s final drive. Danvers added two more second-half scores on a Treacy to Ezra Lombardi 54-yard strike and a McCarthy 2-yard run. Paulino finished with 57 yards on eight carries, while Jandrisevits (6-of 14, 70 yards) finished with 45 yards on 10 carries. Jared Ridley led the receivers with 25 yards on four catches. Guridys chipped in with two receptions good for 38 yards. It’s back to the drawing board PHOTO | BOB CARBONE for Peabody. “I don’t know if we’re moving too fast and losing kids, but if you ask the coaches, they and I would agree that we are not,” said Bettencourt. “Tonight it came down to the shot gaps and we didn’t pick them up. Our footwork was slow and that led to penetration, which led to us not being very smooth on offense and unable to find any rhythm. And we have to understand that swarm doesn’t mean hit after the whistle. Mistakes cost Tanners in football loss By Scot Cooper MARBLEHEAD — For the second straight week, Marblehead coach Jim Rudloff was less than pleased with how his team played. The Magicians didn’t get a first down until late in the first half, but they pounced on some Tanner mistakes to win the game 28-7 Friday night at Piper Field. “Peabody played a great game, I know they had a tough week, but we should’ve been a lot better than we were,” Rudloff said. “I honestly can’t express how disappointed I am, but I should have seen it coming, we had a terrible week of practice. We might have had a good 10 minutes here or there, but we certainly came out flat tonight.” The Magicians were fortunate that Peabody’s struggles on offense continued for the second straight game. After putting up just three points in a loss against Danvers, the Tanners finally broke through for a touchdown when Alex DeNisco hit Dylan Peluso with a 43-yard strike with 2:27 left to play. Austin Leggett’s kick made it 28-7. Denisco took over for starter Matthew Jandrisevits, who took a heavy hit on a sack by Tamelle Platt. Marblehead (3-0) opened the scoring after Peabody (1-2) lost the ball trying to punt, the ball ending up on the Tanners’ seven. Tim Cronin scored two plays later, and Mason Poisson’s first of four PAT’s made it 7-0. The Magicians tried to add to their lead, but Peabody’s Brendan Caniffe swatted away a couple of Chris Gally passes in the end zone, ending the first half with the Tanners down seven. Penalties hurt Peabody in the second half, wiping out several long gains on runs by Angel Paulino and Luis Guidrys. When the Tanners were flagged on offense, it wiped out big gains, and when they were penalized on defense, it gave Marblehead excellent field position. The Magicians took advantage of the Tanners’ largesse, with Gally rushing in from the nine with 6:57 left in the third quarter, making it a 14-0 game. The Magicians got the ball on a short punt, and three snaps later Gally ran to the goal line where he fumbled the ball into the end zone and Devin Romain pounced on it, upping the score to 21-0. With 5:46 left, Cronin scored his second of the game from a yard out to seal the scoring for Marblehead. No, we’re not, but Danvers and Marblehead are two of the best teams on our schedule, so we’ll keep working and it will come,” Bettencourt said. “We need to get some momentum, get some first downs, and get some confidence.
