prepares
for 45-year
anniversary
THE CITY2SURF is about to
celebrate its 45th birthday – and
you can be part of it.
Since 1975, Star Media’s City-
2Surf, one of the South Island’s
largest participation events, has
brought thousands of people
together for fun and fitness.
On March 24, City2Surf will
celebrate its 45th anniversary.
A lot has
changed since
the event’s
humble
beginnings.
However, it still
remains first
and foremost a

Originally,
the City2Surf would start in Cathedral
Square and end at New
Brighton beach.
Later, the finish line was
changed to QE II stadium.
In 2011, following the earthquake,
the event had to be
cancelled as parts of the eastern
route were broken.
Now the start line for the
14km event is at Centennial Park
and the Sport Canterbury 6km
event begins at Hansen Park,
Opawa.
Both events finish at the Ferrymead
playing fields with free

and counselling.
The hospital is unique to New
Zealand in that its services are
frequently updated depending
on the need.

$96,000 raised for
charity boxer’s family

boxer Kain Parsons has raised
more than $96,000. Mr Parsons
received a serious head injury
during a charity boxing match
earlier this month and never
regained consciousness. Life
support was turned off several
days later. The money raised
will go towards his wife and

Company pleads
guilty to discharge
A cold storage company has
admitted poisoning a Belfast
creek, killing almost 2000 eels.
Polarcold Stores Ltd broke
strict environmental laws
when it released ammonia
into the Kaputone Creek in
April. It pleaded guilty in
the Christchurch District
Court yesterday to a charge
of breaching the Resource
Management Act.
Cycleway work to
start soon
Work is about to start on the
final stage of Quarryman’s
Trail, the cycle route between
Halswell and the central
city. The work will involve
constructing 3.8km of off-road
cycleway and installing two
new sets of traffic lights at
the Henderson Rd/Sparks Rd
intersection, as well as a midblock
crossing on Sparks Rd at
Milns Reserve.
Report lost property,
vandalism online
A new tool on the New Zealand
Police website will allow
people to report lost property
or vandalism online. The tool
is currently being trialled
as police plan to expand the
service so people can make
other non-emergency reports
online. It can be used to report
lost property or intentional
property damage, to buildings,
vehicles and other possessions.
