Married at First Sight couple make up
Ex-hubby’s bid
to sell ring a
‘selfless move’
• By Jessica Wilson and
Julia Evans
WHILE their relationship
ended in tears, Married at First
Sight contestant Julia Malley
is fully supportive of her exhusband’s
bid to sell his wedding
ring to raise money for a child in
need.
But she is holding onto her’s
for now.
When Dunedin’s Dave
McClelland’s marriage to Ms
Malley, a media consultant for
Stuff in Christchurch, broke up
this year, he was left with a ninecarat
white gold wedding band
worth about $1600.
The pair were matched by
experts, agreed to marry when
they first met and had to decide
if they wanted to remain married
by the end of the series.
Rather than keep or sell the
ring, Mr McClelland gave it to
a Dunedin family hoping to
raise $150,000 for surgery in the
United States. It sold for $1021.
“I 100 per cent support him.
BROKEN: Julia Malley and Dave McClelland’s relationship on
Married at First Sight did not end well, but the pair are now
on speaking terms.
I think it’s a good thing he’s
doing . . . I think it was a great,
selfless move and I support him
wholeheartedly,” Ms Malley said.
She said she still has her ring
and has not decided what to do
with it yet.
Three-year-old twins Harry
and Ollie Finch, of Dunedin,
were born prematurely at 29
weeks after having twin-to-twin
transfusion syndrome.
At six weeks old, Harry was
diagnosed with cerebral palsy
and will not be able to walk or
stand independently.
He has been accepted for a
$150,000 surgery in the US,
which will give him a better
chance of walking on his own.
Mr McClelland played rugby
with Harry’s dad, Hayden, years
ago and offered to give them the
ring to auction. ‘
‘I think it’s [the ring] just the
final reminder of what was not
meant to be,’’ he said.
‘‘I just really felt that someone
else could benefit from it.’’
Mr McClelland took the ring
to the Finchs’ house on Monday
night and met Harry.
Although
the ring was
worth about
$1600, he was
not sure how
much could
be raised
from it.
‘‘If it’s
marketed
well and
shared well
with all of my
Dave
McClelland
followers, then it’s one of those
things, who knows?
Ms Malley said the pair were
back on friendly terms after not
speaking to each other.
“It changes every day with us,
but it’s all good now,” Ms Malley
said.
Mr McClelland said after a
rocky period after the show, they
were talking again.
“We’re working on a friendship.”
Permanent
alcohol ban for
Linwood Village
DRINKING alcohol on the
streets and parks around
Linwood Village will be banned
permanently.
A bylaw change was approved
by the city council on Thursday,
which will apply aroundthe-clock,
seven days a week
and cover the blocks between
Fitzgerald Ave, Armagh St,
England St and Hereford St,
including Doris Lusk Reserve.
The city council put in place
a temporary liquor ban late last
year in a bid to try and reduce
the high level of alcohol-fuelled
crime and disorder in the area.
Central Ward city councillor
Deon Swiggs said the Linwood-
Central-Heathcote Community
Board strongly supported the
alcohol ban becoming permanent
as it wanted Linwood
Village to be a safe, welcoming
place to shop or visit.
“Before the temporary alcohol
ban came into force residents
and shopkeepers reported
feeling intimidated and unsafe
because of the anti-social
behaviour displayed by people
drinking in the street,” he said.
Cr Swiggs said the ban had
been effective in reducing a
number of concerns.
