BASIC INFORMATION
125 papers related to Urban Planning and Design have been presented at various sessions during WUF9
from 7-13 February 2018.
The themes of 125 papers have been categories under 10 key items which relevance to Urban Planning
and Design; namely
• Develop evidence-based, strategic and
binding urban plans at all levels:
territorial, metropolitan, city, and local, in
order to guide sustainable urban
development;
• Create integrated urban and territorial
planning and design tools and
mechanisms;
• Ensure transparent, collaborave and
parcipatory planning and design
processes;
• Protect and conserve natural ecosystems
and cultural heritage with urban and
territorial planning and design;
• Create compact, connected, integrated,
safe and inclusive urban space with tools
and instruments for urban and territorial
planning and design;
• Ensure equitable access to public goods
and urban services with coherent and
coordinated urban and territorial
management;
• Promote adequate and affordable
housing and access to urban land as a
fundamental element of urban planning
and design;
• Develop urban strategies and
intervenons that improve and integrate
informal and precarious selements;
• Develop urban strategies and
intervenons that promote inclusive and
sustainable urban mobility and a system
of safe, affordable and accessible public
transport for all;
• Plan for urban and climate resilience with
urban and territorial planning and design
OBJECTIVES
Strategic objecve: Integrate forward-thinking urban and territorial planning and design with
parcipave instruments and mechanisms capable of addressing the challenges of current and future
urban systems. Urban Planning and Design in WUF9 aims to:

UN-Habitat as well as other instuons
and stakeholders;
Idenfy gaps and needs emerging from
the New Urban Agenda from an urban
planning and design perspecve;

governance arrangements, partnerships,
and indicators of success; and
Discuss will use selected themes to
illustrate how creave urban planning
and design soluons and effecve local
implementaon mechanisms can change
how cies and human selements are
built and managed.
