WUF WOMEN’S ASSEMBLY
The gender gap in decision-making between men and women is over 10 per cent in every
Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) country. Stressing
that women worldwide were often excluded from economic activities despite making up
more than half of the workforce, she said that women also shouldered responsibilities for
the unpaid work.
Despite the women’s huge contribution to the family and community, women have less
economic empowerment, less income and are less independent. The imbalance of the
gender role in the OECD country has led to the imbalance in policy making. Globally,
there were less than 25 per cent of women parliamentarians that had led to a weaker
voice in decision making.
A city cannot be inclusive or indeed sustainable without participation of women. As for
that, in UN Habitat, we have recognised the need for the cities to be planned in a gender
responsive manner by organising large programmes such as safer cities, public space and
slum upgrading.
The Women's Assembly is a platform to discuss how to implement the New Urban
Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals by addressing subjects towards gender
equality and empowering women.
Meanwhile, Huairou Commission president, Jan Peterson said women had always been
the eyes and ears of the community, but in order to build a good neighbourhood,
everyone, from the top to bottom had to be linked. Women have to monitor what are the
issues happening around us which is an essential component.
