What do Komani locals wish
for their country in 2019?
We asked a few residents and this is what they
said:
Thobeka Mqamelo said her only wish for “my
beloved country” was for all South Africans to
play their part to make SA a better place “where
we all unequivocally embrace and impress in our
conscience the essence of belonging, caring and
a commitment to serve”.
Mqamelo said holding on to what we all
treasure, would see SA moving forward. She
wished all South Africans a prosperous 2019.
Andre Naude said he hoped it would be a year
where the country’s leaders would put SA first
and turn away from selfish and destructive ways.
“I wish that they seek wise council and succeed
rather than fail because of their ignorance and
arrogance.”
Lonwabo Kowa said he wished for all South
Africans to live responsibly and to stop criminal
acts, such as drinking and driving and the abuse
of women and children.
“As we are moving towards the elections, I wish
to see tolerance by all political formations and
that the elections serve as a tool of encouraging
democracy and unity. I also hope that more
unemployed South Africans will get jobs.”
A change in local government to ensure that
people get services they pay for and deserve, is
the wish of Ken Clark.
He said he also wished that the country’s
people would pull together as a nation to grow
the economy and create much-needed jobs.
“I wish we could all have good reasons to be
proud South Africans once more.”
Dawie Kernekamp said he hoped 2019 would
mark better service delivery and the fixing of
roads.
He also hoped for everyone to get along and to
live in a happy and free SA.
A country headed by an honest leadership
dedicated to improving SA instead of enriching
themselves, was the wish of Yolande Stellenberg.
She also hoped for more job opportunities,
particularly for those who had just finished school
and university, and for President Cyril Ramaphosa
“to step up to the plate”.
“I wish we would all genuinely care for one
another. We all need compassion and we need to
give it as well. For our leaders, I wish for them to
have true reverence to our God and spiritual
transformation as evidenced by the fruits they
b e a r. ”
Pat Stock of Cathcart said she wished for a
country in which everyone would work together
for the benefit of all as peacemakers looking for
solutions.
Gizelle Stridee said she hoped for people to
promote peace and love “and that we face
problems together irrespective the colour of our
skin, culture or race”.
She also hoped for committed, hardworking and
competent leaders in 2019.
“I wish that greediness and corruption stops
and that leaders in high places be appointed
based on their competence, dedication and heart
for the people. I wish that the crime rate drops
and that people can feel safe wherever they go. I
also wish for an effective plan against drug
abuse.”
Calvin Nelani said he would love every South
African municipality to recruit qualified town
planners so zoning schemes and related
legislation could be put in place and enforced to
allow better service delivery, a better economy
and structured towships, cities and towns.
“I would also like for people to stop thinking
that 9 to 5 is the only way of living. Start your own
business!”
WE WISH YOU ... a merry
Christmas! Madeira Home for the
Aged boasts a beautiful display
Upgrade boost for school
Hexagon High School will be able to
accommodate more pupils from
next year, thanks to an investment
by the Education Department and the
Development Bank of South Africa.
Pre-fabricated classrooms have been
erected at the school which has been
identified as one of a limited number of
“hot spot” schools – schools which are
in demand – in the Komani district.
Principal Malcolm Lentoor said the
pupil number was expected to increase
from 518 to 660 with the classrooms
handed over to the school last week.
Lentoor was thrilled by the
development at a school which has
gained recognition for its high academic
standards in the past. – Rep reporter
WSU Queenstown campus student visits India
Walter Sisulu University
Queenstown campus
student Lerato Tshefu
recently visited India on
a mentorship and
learning trip.
The trip was the
result of Tshefu winning
in a innovative ideapitching
competition for
students at a South
African Technology
Network (SATN) 2018
Conference in Durban.
Three students
represented WSU –
Tshefu, Mxolisi Zoko
and Zama Nako – with
the conference theme,
“The Impact of the
Fourth Industrial
Revolution in
E d u c at i o n ”.
In line with this,
students had to pitch
an innovative idea.
For the WSU, the idea
was about an e d u c at i o n
app for learning and
studying outside the
classroom.
The app seeks to
provide a platform for
students to have access
to teaching and study
material to ultimately
improve their marks.
The background and
advantage for this app
is that most students
are already using
smartphones for their
connection. Unlike
other education
platforms, Study Buddy,
as the app is known,
will have live streaming
and playback of video
and audio content.
The panel of seven
judges was impressed
with the idea and the
three-minute pitch.
Tshefu was chosen
along with two students
from Tshwane
University of
Technology (TUT) and
Cape Peninsula
University of
Technology (CPUT). Part
of the reason for the
idea pitching was to
help these students
develop them into
practical business
ideas.
Lerato found it to be
a great learning
experience to meet with
app developers and to
expand his knowledge.
“It was a good
experience for me. I
now know more about
app development and
digital marketing. I had
a very knowledgeable
team to help me to
build our minimum
viable product [MVP].
SATN CEO Dr Anshu
Padayachee was also
present.”
To make the MVP will
require about R600,000
if it functions according
to specifications.
App development
requires a proper
execution and a clear
sustainability plan.
From the knowledge
gained from his
mentors in India, Lerato
and the team will now
take the app forward.
Funders within the
technological field have
shown interest in the
app.
Te c h n o l o g y
Innovation Africa TIA
has made a
commitment to provide
support as the idea fit
in well with some of
their objectives.
Sponsorship a problem for new business
ANDISA BONANI
The founder of Get
It Done (GID),
Calvin Nelani, a
vibrant local
entrepreneur, recently
hosted the annual open
market in the La Aura
Lounge and Sports Bar
parking lot.
The aim was to
provide a platform for
business networking.
The open market had
various local
ent repreneurs
showcasing their
businesses while
interacting and
exchanging business
ideas to support growth
in business.
Nelani indicated the
event was held to
enhance the level of
understanding when it
came to culture,
academics, arts,
fashion, food and
lifestyle, and to
motivate young people
in Komani to pursue
their dreams.
“Our mission and
objective is to gather
people who are
passionate about
growing and developing
the Eastern Cape in the
various forms of arts.
Funding is one of the
major limitations that
hinders the success of
ent repreneurs.
“I have invested in
several academic
courses such
m a r ke t i n g ,
interpersonal
communication and
social media
management, general
books, and attended
events, seminars and
c o n s u l t at i o n
workshops.
“All this costs money
and is necessary to
grow personally and to
achieve success in
business,” he said.
His business faced a
challenge of people not
understanding what it
was about and that
affected potential
sponsorships that
would elevate his
company to what he
wanted it to be, Nelani
said.
“The issue with
sponsors is that
Komani is a small town
and everyone goes to
the same people for
assistance. Some
funders do not want to
associate themselves
with companies whose
reputation they do not
k n o w. ”
Nelani called on all
big businesses, who
wanted to see young,
independent
entrepreneurs succeed,
to back his business.
GLOBAL CELEBRATION:
Christmas is a fascinating time
of the year worldwide
Make your own tree decorations
Oh Christmas tree … how
difficult it is to decorate
thee! (with apologies to
composer Ernst Anschütz).
If it’s the first time you
have a Christmas tree in
your home, do not despair.
If you can buy some
ornaments at local stores
that is great, and you will be
able to turn the tree into a
thing of beauty.
This route may prove
expensive, however, so why
not instead try to make
some ornaments? Stringing
popcorn together can make
a beautiful decoration for a
Christmas tree while the
children can enjoy making
angels out of paper with
glue and glitter.
During the holidays, this
can be a wonderful
boredom-buster exercise!
Make small, personalised
Christmas cards and hang
them on the tree for guests
to read on Christmas Day or
buy some gold or silver
spraypaint for use on acorns.
Attach a small loop using
string and there you go!
Another innovative idea is
making pom-poms of
different colours out of wool
(the kids might also enjoy
this one) or baking
gingerbread men and
hanging these on the tree –
a delightful snack for the
special day.
Finally, why not use some
wood slices, paint merry
pics on these and insert a
loop for hanging – all at low
c o st .
Enjoy decorating your
Christmas tree this year. –
a new year
The countdown to midnight on December 31
has begun and soon people worldwide will
celebrate the start of a new year in 2019.
The onset of a new year generally brings
about celebration as people look forward to a
new period.
There are some strange ways to celebrate the
onset of a new year, however, as David Pegg
indicates (w w w. l i s t 2 5 . c o m ):
ý In Spain, if you are able to stuff 12 grapes
in your mouth, you are assured of a good new
year;
ý In Denmark, people break unused plates
and dishes against the doors of family and
friends’ homes as a sign of goodwill;
ý In South America, the colour of the
underwear you’re wearing on the day may
impact on your wellbeing in the new year –
that is, white will mean peace, etc;
ý In Takanakuy village in Peru, people slug it
out to settle their differences at the end of the
year, thus starting the new year with a clean
s l at e ;
ý In Romania, people toss coins into rivers
to wish for a better future.
CELEBRATE KOMANI
How did custom start?
Ah, the Christmas stocking –
the humble footwear made
good over the festive period and
often stuffed with some
delicious treats or small gifts.
But where did the tradition of
hanging Christmas stockings
o r i g i n at e ?
Well, according to the
website w w w. l i t t l e t h i n g s . c o m , the
tradition originally started many
years ago when a poor widowed
man became worried that he
would not find suitors for his
three daughters.
Santa Claus found out and
slid down the chimney at night
to fill the stockings with gold
coins for the three girls. The
tradition apparently carried on
after that until today but, in
reality, who knows?
It is a treat to find a special
surprise in a stocking on
Christmas Day, however! – Rep
repor ter
It’s a special time of year –
Christmas time! Here are some
great quotes that epitomize this
season of goodwill towards all.
ý “Then the Grinch thought
of something he hadn’t before!
What if Christmas, he thought,
doesn’t come from a store.
What if Christmas, perhaps,
Quotes for Christmas
means a little bit more.”
– Dr Seuss, How the Grinch
Stole Christmas!
ý “I will honour Christmas in
my heart, and try to keep it all
the year.”
– Charles Dickens
ý “Our hearts grow tender
with childhood memories and
love of kindred, and we are
better throughout the year for
having, in spirit, become a child
again at Christmas time.”
– Laura Ingalls Wilder
ý “My idea of Christmas,
whether old-fashioned or
modern, is very simple: loving
others. Come to think of it, why
do we have to wait for
Christmas to do that?”
– Bob Hope
ý “Christmas waves a magic
wand over this world, and
behold, everything is softer and
more beautiful. ”
– Norman Vincent Peale
ý He who has not Christmas
in his heart will never find it
under a tree.”
GIMME SOME
‘SHUGA’
Former convict turns life
around to fight crime
SIMTEMBILE MGIDI
Beaten for stealing
livestock and sentenced
to a prison term for theft,
Zukile Nxabazi has turned
from a life of crime to
fighting it.
It was the faith and
belief of his aunt that he
had potential that had
Nxabazi turn his life
around.
Nxabazi is the treasurer
of the Silvertown
Neighbourhood Wat c h
and has started a soccer
team in his
neighbourhood in Komani.
“I used to live in
Cacadu at eMacubini and
we had a very hard
upbringing. I did not have
parents and lived with my
grandmother and aunt,
together with 10
grandchildren. All of us
depended on my
g r a n d m ot h e r ’s grant.
“When I came to
Komani, everyone had
lost hope in me. When
you are a child and you
grow up hungry, you tend
to be naughty. You tend to
desire the things that are
not available to you and
we would steal sheep
from the nearby farmers
out of hunger.”
He was arrested on
multiple occasions for
stock theft and was
known and disliked for
being a thief.
He said he would steal
a sheep at times to give it
to sports teams as a prize
for their tournaments and
they would pay him what
they could.
He would use this
money to buy his school
uniform and he believes
he was forced by his
situation to turn to crime.
When he was caught, he
would either be beaten up
or sent to the police.
“When I came to
Komani to help my cousin
who was undergoing his
path towards manhood,
my aunt saw that despite
everything I was not a
bad person. She wanted
me to live with her in
Komani. My first job when
I arrived in Komani, paid
me R80 a week. I was
grateful, because I knew I
could do more things if I
used the money wisely,”
Nxabazi said.
It was through his
aunt’s support that he
decided there was no
need for him to return to
crime as she kept the
money he earned and
bought him clothes.
When he wanted
something and his money
was not enough, she
would assist him
f i n a n c i a l l y.
Later the same year, he
moved out of his aunt’s
home into his own. He
learnt how to fix shoes
and bought chickens
which he then resold.
Through the profits he
made, he bought sheep,
goats and cows.
He also learnt some
skills in welding and
construction. His fe a r t h at
his brothers would turn to
crime to survive, made
him take in his older and
younger brothers, as well
as his nephew, to give
them a chance at a better
l i fe .
Nxabazi currently lives
with his own wife, his
older brother and his wife.
“I would like to say to
those involved in criminal
activities, to stop. Crime
will never build you up. In
prison you do not do what
you want to do, you do
what you are told to do. If
we all cared, before
acting in anger or hatred,
we could fight crime and
remove it from our
communities.”
EFF objects to
placing of tanks
ANDISA BONANI
The Chris Hani District
Municipality (CHDM) is
putting up Jojo tanks in
several households in
Ezibeleni as an
emergency means to
mitigate and respond to
water shortages.
EFF branch secretary
Thulani Bukani, who also
lives in Ezibeleni, was
not impressed however
as he said the
community had not been
consulted and that while
tanks were placed at
certain houses, these
were said to be for the
whole community.
“There was no
community meeting to
inform us about the
project which means we
do not know the criteria
that was used to select
at which houses the
tanks would be placed.
“From what we have
seen, the tanks are only
placed in houses whose
members belong to the
ANC. This is a way of
campaigning for votes by
the ANC.”
Bukani said he wanted
to know who funded the
project because if it was
either the local or district
authorities, it was illegal
for them to use
government money to
campaign for a political
par t y.
EFF branch chair
Xolani Ngxathu said all
they wanted as the
community was to be
part of the
decision-making
regarding the placement
of the tanks and for it to
be inclusive of every
community member.
“We have a problem of
ward councillors who
have no regard for
residents. It is the ward
councillor’s duty to call
meetings when projects
like these are being
planned,” N g x at h u said.
“We do not know how
the sites were identified
and this is not the first
time community
members are not
informed when projects
are to start. We want the
project to be halted so
that things are done
correctly and we, as the
community members,
must be allowed to
choose for ourselves
where the tanks should
be placed.”
CHDM spokesperson
Thobeka Mqamelo said
the project sought to
support areas that were
adversely affected by
water outages and that
consultation meetings
were held with affected
ward councillors with
their ward committee
members.
“This is an emergency
programme responding
to water shortages in
high-lying areas. In
Ezibeleni there are 16
tanks meant to be
installed. However, 12
tanks have been
installed and the
remaining four are still
outstanding. These are
erected within agreed
upon premises to ensure
safety. The selected
premises were agreed
between the councillors
and community
members.
“As much as these are
vandalism that is
rampant, the water tank
outlets are externally
overhanging, with stand
pipes clearly located
are not fixed to houses
it would be done in a
Mqamelo said to
Mqamelo added 24
drought, both reserves
had a good year.
Gerber said littering
the opportunity to show our people what
can be done if we all stand together.
Q: What makes you angry – and what
makes you happy?
A: I get angry when adults make
choices based on what they can gain
instead of looking at the side-effects it
has on others, especially children.
I am happy when I am watching and
listening to the excitement of my
husband and three children play touch
rugby in the garden.
Q: Are you proudly South African and
why?
A: Of course I am and so should
everyone who lives in SA. We have an
incredibly beautiful land and a gold
mine of opportunities that are waiting to
be discovered.
Q: Do you have a hobby and if so,
what is it?
A: Oh I have many hobbies ... I love
learning how to do things. I believe I can
do anything – it might take me longer
than others, but in the end I will get it
right. At the moment, I am enjoying the
benefits of my new organic veggie
garden.
Q: What do you believe should be
done to alleviate unemployment?
A: I don’t feel unemployment is the
problem. I believe the lack of bringing
by visitors was
however a problem,
with visitors not
adhering to the rules
and regulations of the
department of
our children up to be entrepreneurs or
“No animals died of
have had several
births, but it is difficult
to say exactly how
many. We are going to
A veld fire had been
that the perpetrator
had not been found.
He said the
Lawrence de Lange
reserve was the
perfect outing for a
game drive.
People could use
their own vehicles for
the game drives, while
the Longhill side,
which was directly
opposite Lawrence de
Lange, was for families
to be able to have
picnics or a braai and
an opportunity to get
away from town.
“The reserve has
He invited locals
and visitors to enjoy
the facilities, but
cautioned people that
as much as the game
reserve was private, it
still fell under the
Make it all
about journey
REACHING OUT: The staff of Thandisizwe
Senior Primary School organised a
wheelchair for Thenjiwe Mbizweni recently
with, back from left, principal Sifundo
Siyeka, HOD Lumka Ntsweni, Lindiswa Seti
and Nosicelo Gobongwana. It is the second
campaign
It’s the end of the year and, once again, many
families will be taking a road trip to their holiday
destination. Often, the focus is on the end point,
particularly for the kids who tend to utter the familiar
phrase: “Are we there yet?”.
But take some time to enjoy the ride and make it a
pleasant journey. With its promise to care and
protect, Tracker provides the following tips to provide
peace of mind and ensure that you get to your
destination safely:
ý Pre-trip check – Ensure your vehicle is fit for the
trip. Fill up with fuel; check the tyre pressure and
tread – don’t forget the spare wheel; check the oil,
water and brake fluid levels; test the headlights, rear
lights, indicators, fog lights and brakes; ensure the
wipers are not perished or broken; make sure the
licence disk is valid; and check that the emergency
triangle, jack and socket wrench are in the vehicle.
ý Testing, testing – Test your tracking device to
make sure it’s working, including the assist button if
your device has one. If you’re subscribed to a first
responder service, it will be reassuring to know help
will be immediately available in the moment of need.
ýSOS – Ensure that you have all important and
emergency contact numbers with you. Make sure
you have an emergency contact number of
someone not travelling with you available to first
responders. Remember, most modern phones need
to be unlocked for use and so having your ICE
contact on your phone isn’t helpful. It might be
better to write this down on a piece of paper. Also,
let someone close to you know of your movements
and your anticipated arrival time, so that they can
alert the authorities if you don’t check in. Some
tracking services have apps you can use to share
your location with such a person.
ý A little bit of planning – Plan your journey in
advance, including sufficient rest stops, and ensure
that you have the correct directions to your
destination. Pack plenty of p a d ko s and drinks. Also,
don’t forget important items like your driver’s licence,
medical aid card, clinic card for babies, veterinary
card for pets, allergy bracelets, and passports if
travelling to a neighbouring country.
ý Activities – Keep the kids entertained with some
car games, like the old favourite “I spy”. Also try
“road trip bingo” where players spot road signs or
sights along the route and cross it off on a board.
If crossing sights off on a board will be a bit tricky,
try the “alphabet game”. Mom or Dad starts the
game by choosing a letter of the alphabet. Whoever
spots that letter out the window first, for example on
a billboard or a licence plate, gets a point. The
person with the most points in the end wins. Also, a
little screen time can offer a decent distraction, so
take along some digital entertainment and don’t
forget to pack the chargers and power banks.
ý Music – Make the journey festive with a
favourite music playlist. Include some good road trip
songs, such as I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The
Proclaimers, Shut Up and Drive by Rihanna, and
Where the Streets have no Name by U2.
“With a little bit of planning and some pre-trip
checks, you can ensure that the journey to get there
is as much fun as the holiday itself,” said Tracker SA
product and marketing executive Michael du Preez.
“Remember, life is about the journey, not the
destination. Wishing you and your loved ones safe
travels and a peaceful and relaxing festive season.”
REACHING OUT: In a joint event hosted by Lukhanji SUPERSPAR, Little Explorers and
Helping Those in Need Queenstown, a Christmas party was hosted for underprivileged
Praise for support in crime fight
Queenstown cluster
commander Major
General Funeka
Siganga has thanked
the Chris Hani district
community for their
support in the fight
against crime during
2018.
Siganga, who
conveyed her best
wishes to community
members and their
families over the
festive period, said the
duty of the police was
to ensure the safety of
visitors, residents and
their property.
”We invite you to
work with us to
achieve our objective
by reporting crime
immediately, looking
out for [your own]
personal safety and
making sure that you
have the contact
information of the
nearest police
st at i o n . ”
Siganga also
thanked police
members for their
work during the year
and praised those who
had achieved success
in the fight against
crime.
She wished
members going away
on holiday a peaceful
period and said those
who remained behind
should ensure that
criminals were
brought to book. –
