significant role, particularly in the capture of Tripoli. 323 He then became part of the transi-<br />

tional government’s Tripoli Military Council, but stepped down to take part in elections in<br />

Libya on July 7, 2012. Belhadj ran as a candidate under the Islamist political party Hizb al-<br />

Watan which, although initially popular, did not do as well as expected. 324 They lost to the<br />

liberal National Forces Coalition party headed by Mahmoud Jibril. 325<br />
