The Member for Chisholm, Julia Banks, has declared
that she will not seek re-election in the upcoming federal
election because she claimed that she was bullied by her
colleagues. The mainstream media is still talking about
whether a culture of bullying really exists in the Liberal
Party. Some are also concerned about the proportion of
female MPs in the government. In Chisholm, more than
20 percent residents come from an ethnic Chinese background.
As the current Member is not seeking re-election,
I believe that the Chinese community should be vitally
interested in the candidates who will represent the two
major parties.
Politics is inseparable from power and infl uence. It is nearly
impossible to eliminate aggressiveness which can be seen
as bullying behaviours from politicians. The margin for
Chisholm in the last election was just 1.2 percent. Labor has
now endorsed Ms Jennifer Yang, a candidate with a Chinese
(Taiwanese) background to seek support from ethnic Chinese
voters. In view of the present low level of support for the
government, there was almost no chance of Julia Banks to
being re-elected. Using alleged bullying behaviour inside the
Liberal Party as an excuse for not seeking re-election is just
a ploy to avoid defeat and is simply not convincing. The fact
that Julia does not even want to give it a try is disappointing
for those who had voted for her last time.
In Chisholm, the contest for support between the two major
parties is very close across the electorate overall. Chinese-
Australian voters, mostly new immigrants, are likely to end up
determining who will win the seat. In the last election, neither
party had nominated a candidate of Chinese background, a
situation which had caused a lot of dissatisfaction among the
Chinese community. Now in opposition, Labor is trying hard
to win this seat back. The nomination of Jennifer Yang obviously
is aimed to attract more Chinese votes. In order to counteract
the low support for the government, the only chance for
the Liberals is to nominate a well-supported high-profile candidate
of Chinese background. If this does happen, Chisholm is
guaranteed to have the first ever Chinese-Australian elected as
a lower-house federal MP.
For the past 15 years, there have not been many active
Chinese Liberals who had represented theVictorian Liberal
Party in federal elections. However, we do have Gladys
Liu, the former advisor to Premier Ted Baillieu and Premier
Denis Napthine, the former Melbourne City Councillor
Ken Ong, the current Melbourne City Councillor Philip Liu,
the Kingston City Councillor George Hua and the Monash
City Councillor MT Tsoi. If Liberal Party is to continue to
govern, they must hold the seat of Chisholm. Whether the
Liberals will nominate a Chinese-Australian as a candidate
can been seen as an indicator as to how hard they try to
get re-elected. I believe that this will also affect their support
and the confidence of the broader electorate.
For a long time, the two major parties have claimed that
they support having Chinese-Australians in the Parliament.
Labor has demonstrated their goodwill in this
regard by nominating Jennifer Yang. It now leaves the
Liberals to show the same goodwill. The Chinese community
should keep an eye on this issue.
