Ed expo offered<br />

With the holidays in the rear-view mirror,<br />

parents are looking ahead to summer. The<br />

Parkway-Rockwood Community Ed program<br />

is here to help.<br />

Sponsored in part by <strong>West</strong> <strong>Newsmagazine</strong>,<br />

Summer Expo 20<strong>19</strong> is from 11 a.m.-3<br />

p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10 at Marquette High,<br />

<strong>23</strong>51 Clarkson Road. The event features<br />

100 local and regional exhibitors offering<br />

programming for students in pre-K through<br />

high school.<br />

Admission is free. Participants do not<br />

need to attend school or reside in the Parkway<br />

or Rockwood school districts. Parents<br />

who attend the Expo and visit the Community<br />

Ed tables can get a coupon code for 15<br />

percent off most Community Ed summer<br />

programs. The coupon code is good for<br />

The Gloria Barron Prize for Young<br />

Heroes is accepting applications online<br />

at barronprize.org through April 15. The<br />

Barron Prize celebrates inspiring, publicspirited<br />

young people from across the<br />

U.S. and Canada. Established in 2001 by<br />

author T.A. Barron, the Barron Prize annually<br />

honors 25 outstanding young leaders<br />

ages 8 to 18, who have made a significant<br />

positive difference to people and the environment.<br />

Fifteen top winners each receive<br />

$10,000 to support their service work or<br />

higher education.<br />

The March 1 deadline is approaching<br />

for young actors to register for the<br />

National Society of Arts and Letters<br />

[NSAL] 20<strong>19</strong> Chapter Drama Competition.<br />

Actors between the ages of 18 and<br />

27 are eligible to apply. Contestants<br />

must present two audition monologues<br />

– a comedic and serious piece – from<br />

memory before a panel of top-ranked<br />

professional judges on March 16 at Webster<br />

University in St. Louis.<br />

Air Force JROTC on<br />

top of their game<br />

Four drill teams representing the Missouri<br />

81st Air Force Junior Reserve Officer<br />

Training Corps [AFJROTC] from Lafayette<br />

High traveled to Daytona Beach to<br />

showcase their skills at the Lake Worth<br />

High School Invitational Drill Meet.<br />

The teams consisted of the regulation<br />

drill team, the exhibition drill team and<br />

two color guard teams [exhibition and regulation].<br />

This year, the teams came home<br />

with two third-place trophies and six firstplace<br />

trophies.<br />

Emily Gauvreau was awarded best<br />

overall commander. She oversees the<br />

regulation and 30-command teams. The<br />

other first-place awards included Regulation<br />

Color Guard, Inspection; Regulation<br />

Color Guard, Performance; Regulation<br />

Drill Team, Inspection; Exhibition, Performance;<br />

and 30-Command, Performance.<br />

The third-place awards were Regulation<br />

Drill Team, Performance and 30-Command,<br />

Inspection.<br />

Other commanders include Andrew<br />

Teague, who commands the exhibition<br />

team and Nick Gauvreau who commands<br />

the color guard. Senior Master Sgt. Dave<br />

Cugier is the instructor in charge of drill<br />

and Don Gauvreau coaches the color guard<br />

team.
