The J], has created theatrical productions
since 1997 when the center saw a demand
for professional theater programming and
productions that reflect the Jewish experience.
Its home is the Marvin & Harlene
Wool Studio Theater in the Arts & Education
Building of the J’s Staenberg Family
Complex in Creve Coeur.
“We’re part of the JCC, but we’re dedicated
to the exploration of Jewish themes
and issues, as well as the full examination
of the human experience,” Coffield said.
“We believe that, through theater, we can
enrich lives.”
Sometimes, the plays are chosen for their
significant Jewish content or emphasis on
American-Jewish playwright but, according
to Coffield, another goal is to use the
productions to help engage the larger community.
“There’s a tradition in Judaism called
‘tikkun olam’ that is, ‘We’re all responsible
for repairing the world,’” Coffield said. “I
think so much of the work we do at New
Jewish is about keeping that message
moving forward; that we all are responsible
for making the world better.”
What began initially as a theatrical programming
extension of The J has since
grown into a five-production season with
12 performances dedicated to each show
and leadership from an accomplished theater
company.
Coffield has about 30 years of theater
experience, including a 28-year span as
the production manager for The Repertory
Theatre of St. Louis, and an overlapping
career with NJT, first as the theatre’s
associate artistic director and then
[since April 2018] as its artisitc director.
In that time, he directed productions
such as “My Mother’s Lesbian
Jewish Wiccan Wedding,” “Yentl”
and from the theater’s 2018-2019
season, “An Act of God.”
He has been nominated for Outstanding
Director of a comedy at
the St. Louis Theater Circle Awards
and is a three-time nominee for The
Kevin Kline Award for Outstanding
Direction.
Many of NJT’s productions also
are award-winning, including “The
Immigrant” by Mark Harelik, which
received five awards in multiple
categories at the 2011 Kevin Kline
Awards. The show’s plot focuses on
a Jewish-American family’s emigra-
