Like Geena, Olivia recorded her milestone in a road game at Westminster Christian Academy against the Wildcats. The Colts scored a 58-47 victory in the non-conference contest. In the game, Olivia topped the 1,000-point plateau when she made a layup in a fast break on an assist from teammate Brooke Hilton. Before the game, coach Brian Guilfoyle had let Westminster officials know Olivia was three points shy of the 1,000-point mark. When she broke the barrier, a timeout was called so the 5-foot-8 senior guard could be recognized. “Her teammates were extremely happy and she was excited,” Guilfoyle said. “This is a big accomplishment that takes years of hard work.” At the next Colts home game, Olivia was honored in a halftime ceremony. She is the eighth Parkway Central female player to top 1,000 points. The most recent player before her to accomplish the feat was Geena in the 2016-17 season. “It was such a cool coincidence that we both hit 1,000 points at the same place,” Olivia said. “I’m about 200 points behind from what Geena scored in her high school career. It’s definitely not my top priority for the season to score more points than she did, but having bragging rights is always fun.” The sisters played together for Guilfoyle for two years before Geena graduated. “I cherish every moment I got to spend on the court with her,” Olivia said. “She taught me how to lead a team through example and to always play my hardest.” Reaching 1,000 points is a task rarely accomplished, Guilfoyle noted. “You have to average 10 points per game for four years. It is hard to score that well consistently and also stay healthy.” Olivia has been playing basketball since she was 5 years old. “Playing just became second nature to me. I definitely use basketball as an outlet, and it’s always been more than a game to me,” Olivia said. “Basketball has brought me so many amazing teammates who have turned into family. The adrenaline I get when I step on the court is not comparable to anything.” Olivia started for Parkway Central’s varsity squad in her first game as a freshman Olivia Stephens with coach Brian Guilfoyle and never looked back. When she was just a sophomore, the varsity squad named Olivia as one of its captains – a position she has held ever since. “She was a natural leader and was one of the hardest workers I have ever coached,” Guilfoyle said. “I have never had a threeyear captain.” As a junior, Olivia led the team in scoring at more than 17 points per game and made 71 3-pointers. She became one of the best outside threats in the area as her 3-point percentage was 47.3 percent for the Colts, who finished 22-5. “I think anyone who’s seen me play would probably say my shot is my greatest strength,” Olivia said. “I love to shoot the 3.” Like most successful athletes, Olivia puts in the hours in the offseason. “Olivia lives by the motto ‘players are made in the offseason, teams are made during the season,’” Guilfoyle said. “She is unselfish and tries to get others involved. Her points per game are lower this year because she is helping other kids score and has a team-first mentality.” For the remainder of the season, Olivia has one big goal. “We haven’t won districts the past three years I’ve been playing for Parkway Central,” Olivia said. “With all the talent and dedication on our team, I know getting a title is in our future.” Once the season ends, that’s it for Olivia as a Colt. She’ll be off to college at Trivecca Nazarene University where she will play basketball and major in pre-med. Olivia credits her parents, Jane and Eric Stephens, for helping her follow her dreams. “Their love and support is unmatched and I’m forever grateful,” Olivia said.
