Council pays for
repairs to Masefield Drive
• By Anan Zaki
RATEPAYERS WILL initially
foot the $93,000 bill to complete
an unfinished footpath in
Rolleston.
The district council says it’s
still negotiating with Rolleston
Square developers over who will
pick up the final tab to repair
the footpath on Masefield Drive,
outside The
Warehouse.
But until the
agreement is
reached, the
council will pay
for the upcoming
David Ward
repairs over the
next month.
The district
council and developer Rolleston
Square Ltd believed the
opposing party was responsible
to complete the footpath on
Masefield Drive.
Last month, Selwyn
Times repeatedly asked the
council if it would pay to finish
the footpath, but it did not
respond.
A council spokesman finally
admitted last week that it would
pick up the initial $93,000 bill
and then negotiate to split the
costs with Rolleston Square Ltd.
Rolleston Square director
Lloyd Bathurst refused to
comment.
The district council says work
will start “shortly” to upgrade
the section of Masefield Drive
between the entrance to the
Rolleston Square shopping
centre and Dryden Ave.
But the district council would
not say an exact date for when
2019
ON THE DOMAIN LINCOLN 2 MARCH 2019
the repairs will begin this
month. The work will be finished
by the end of next month, the
council spokesman said.
Rolleston Residents’
Association chairwoman Leonie
MacLachlan is happy that the
road and footpath is being
repaired.
“I’m pleased that the council
is going to make it safe and also
tidied up for the neighbours that
live across the road,” she said.
“I’m sure they will go through
their normal channels of
recovering the debt from the
developer.”
District council chief executive
David Ward said the work will
address concerns expressed
about the area of road alongside
the new shopping centre.
Mr Ward said road widening,
new kerbing and a footpath will
be installed along the north side
of Masefield Drive, connecting
to the recently completed traffic
signals at Rolleston Drive
through to Dryden Ave.
A new section of footpath will
also be installed on McCaulay St
to improve safe pedestrian access
to the shopping centre.
LAWN MOWER FIRE
Lincoln firefighters were called
to put out a ride on lawn mower
that was on fire on Friday. The
incident happened at 2.20pm
at Wardstay Rd, near Tai Tapu.
Lincoln deputy fire officer Roger
McLenaghen said the blaze was
put out in about 10min and no
one was hurt. A cause of the fire
is unknown at this stage, he said.
LED LIGHT UPGRADES
Work on installing new LED
street lights in the district
will accelerate this year.
District council asset manager
transportation Andrew Mazey
said the $3.3 million project to
replace 5800 lights across Selwyn
is on track for completion in
2021. About 400 street lights
have been replaced, mostly in
Ellesmere and West Melton to
date, he said.
LINCOLN UNI RANKING
For the second year in a row
Lincoln is the only New Zealand
university ranked in the UI
Green Metric World University
Rankings, which measure
sustainability. The university’s
highest score in the recently
released 2018 rankings came in
the education category.
“I dream of a Pacific where this terrible disease has
been eradicated and can no longer cause fear, stigma
and discrimination in families and communities.”
Lorena and three of her children were diagnosed with leprosy.
Lorena says “Although our leprosy could be cured, we knew that
sometimes there can be serious effects from the disease, like
disabilities. I was terrified that more of my children would get sick.
But then the Pacific Leprosy Foundation started its new programme
which gives medicine to the rest of the family so that they are
much less likely to get leprosy. It was wonderful to have that
reassurance! Now I want the rest of the countries in the Pacific
to be able to take part in this programme, but I know that costs a lot
of money.”
Your gift of $35 will provide preventative
treatment for one household contact of a
leprosy patient.
A gift of $420 enables the treatment of an
average household in Kiribati, Samoa or the
Solomon Islands.
