During the past several years, Southern’s<br />

operations have climbed steadily, thanks in<br />

large part to new investments in stateof-the-art<br />

technology for production and<br />

process automation. Computerized equipment<br />

assures increased efficiency, higher quality, and<br />

greater accuracy.<br />

In a policy aimed at expanding Southern’s<br />

geographical and job reach, the company<br />

provides contractor support on design/<br />

build projects for cost-efficient construction<br />

and quick occupancy. Southern has been<br />

involved in all types of building projects<br />

including major industrial plants, offices,<br />

shopping facilities, commercial skyscrapers,<br />

warehouses, heavy installations and custom<br />

structural steel fabrications.<br />

Among its customers are such firms as<br />

Duke Power, DuPont, Shimizu American<br />

Corporation, J. A. Jones, Beers Construction,<br />

and Whiting-Turner Contracting.<br />

A look at <strong>Charlotte</strong>’s skyline reveals scores of<br />

well-known buildings on which Southern has<br />

worked, including earlier work on Eastland<br />

Mall, Wachovia Center, Westinghouse Nuclear<br />

Turbine Plant, and the old <strong>Charlotte</strong> Coliseum.<br />

When the coliseum was built in 1955, its<br />

structural steel dome, spanning 322 feet, was<br />

the world’s largest. More recent work includes<br />

the Concord Mills Mall, Ballantyne Shopping<br />

Center, Davidson College, and many <strong>Charlotte</strong>-<br />

Mecklenburg schools.<br />

Southern’s operations remain on<br />

Wilkinson Boulevard and are located within<br />

easy access of two interstate highways.<br />

The engineers, draftsmen, estimators, and<br />

technicians, some of whom have worked for<br />

Southern Engineering for more than forty<br />

years, are highly skilled and experienced. Its<br />

professional technical teams consistently<br />

receive the highest ratings from the American<br />

Institute of Steel Construction.<br />

Officials at Southern Engineering are<br />

enthusiastic about the company’s long history<br />
