PREFACE
Works of history are never created alone. I have received countless tips, hints, and suggestions, in addition to
helpful assistance, from many, but I would like to especially recognize Carl Brasseaux and James Wilson of the
Center for Louisiana Studies at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette; Jean Kiesel and Bruce Turner of the Special
Collections Department at UL Lafayette’s Dupré Library; and Clerk of Court Louis Perret and Connie Credeur of the
Lafayette Parish Clerk of Court’s Office. My grandparents, Catherine and Carrol Martin, who know more about
Lafayette history than I can comprehend, provided invaluable information and encouragement. My wife, Amy, and
son, Sam, reminded me why I do this.
