A REGION WITH APPEAL
Things are happening in our state, and have been doing
so for some time. The people who live here put every
effort into dealing with the huge challenge of structural
change entailed in the fundamental transformation of the
former coal and steel region. Successful changes to the
state’s economic structures have now resulted in a situation
where the Saarland today has more jobs than ever
before.
Big players in the steel, automotive and engineering in -
dustry epitomise one of Germany’s strongest growth and
export regions, as well as innovative high-tech and software
developers operating on a global scale. Together with the
efficient small and medium-sized businesses, they put the
economy in the Saarland on course for success. Several of
the state’s research institutes take the lead in their particular
field, in information and communication technology, nanoand
biotechnology, medicine, medical technology and
pharmacy as well as materials science, mechatronics and
automation technology.
A strong IT sector brings the location new possibilities for
ongoing digitisation. Today already, the Saarland is a
renowned European IT location with excellent future
prospects. The “Centre for IT Security, Privacy and Accountability”
(CISPA) has just been upgraded to a Helmholtz
Centre, a milestone for the Saarland and the current renewed
structural change that is being driven by the digital
revolution.
Artificial intelligence is another future topic with excellent
prospects for the Saarland. The state is home to the German
Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) with its
excellent reputation. Current efforts to establish essential
parts of a new Franco-German artificial intelligence research
institute here in Saarbrücken underline the importance of
the state as a science and research location, especially in the
cross-border context, which has huge significance for the
Saarland. The career prospects offered by this excellent IT
and research landscape make the Saarland an IT hotspot;
furthermore, it must also be said that our universities are also
at the forefront when it comes to first-rate business startups.
