Dependent events<br />

Where the result of one event depends<br />

on the result of another event. [See also<br />

Independent events.]<br />

e.g.<br />

The probability of a lotto number<br />

less than 10 depends on what<br />

numbers have already been<br />

drawn.<br />

Depth<br />

Vertical distance downwards from a given position [see Altitude].<br />

Descending order<br />

An ordered arrangement according<br />

to number or size, beginning with the<br />

largest.<br />

e.g.<br />

16, 13, 10, 7 are in descending<br />

order.<br />

Diagonal<br />

A line segment joining two vertices<br />

that are not next to each other; thus<br />

a rectangle has two diagonals but a<br />

triangle has none.<br />

e.g.<br />

In the rectangle<br />

ABCD, the diagonals<br />

are the line segments<br />

AC <strong>and</strong> BD.<br />

Diameter<br />

The width of a circle, determined by<br />

the length of any chord that passes<br />

through the centre of the circle<br />

[see p. 94].<br />

Die (Dice)<br />

A polyhedron, usually a cube, marked<br />

with dots or numerals on each face<br />

<strong>and</strong> used for games of chance. [Dice<br />

is plural for die, <strong>and</strong> is often incorrectly<br />

used for both singular <strong>and</strong> plural cases.]<br />

e.g.<br />

Difference<br />

The amount by which two numbers<br />

differ.<br />

e.g.<br />

The difference between 6 <strong>and</strong><br />

10 is 4.<br />

Digits<br />

The symbols used in a numeration<br />

system. [Digits are also fingers—from the<br />

Latin digitus—as fingers have always<br />

been used for counting.]<br />

e.g.<br />

0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 are the<br />

digits used in our Hindu-Arabic<br />

decimal system.<br />
