List of mathematical terms Vinculum (–) The horizontal dash or ‘fraction line’ separating the numerator and denominator of a fraction and which indicates division. [The forward slash ‘/’ is also used for the same purpose, as in 3 / 4 ]. e.g. The ‘–’ separating the 3 and the 4 in the fraction, so that 3 4 = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75 Volume The amount of space occupied. [See also Capacity, and pp. 114–115.] W Week A unit of time consisting of seven days [see p. 109]. Weight The force of gravity acting on an object, used to measure mass. [Weight is measured in Newtons, named after the great mathematician Isaac Newton, who developed the laws of gravity.] Whole number [See Cardinal number] Width [See Breadth] X x-axis & y-axis [See Coordinates] Y Yard Year Z 56 An imperial unit of length equivalent to about 91 cm. The time it takes the Earth to revolve around the sun and set at 365 days for a normal year and 366 days in a leap year. [The exact time is 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, 45 seconds. See p. 110.] Zero (0) The cardinal number of the empty set is 0; i.e. the first whole number.
