Pictograph (Picture graph)<br />

A graph that represents data in picture<br />

form, <strong>and</strong> where one picture may<br />

represent one or more units [see p. 83].<br />

Pie graph (Pie chart; Circle graph)<br />

A graph in which the sectors of a circle<br />

are used to show a whole in <strong>terms</strong> of<br />

its parts; i.e. each sector represents a<br />

category <strong>and</strong> its fraction of the total<br />

[see p. 83].<br />

Place value<br />

The value of each place in a numeration<br />

system. [Thus the value of a digit<br />

depends on its position in a numeral.]<br />

hundreds, tens, ones <strong>and</strong> tenths.<br />

Plane<br />

In geometry, a surface that is flat <strong>and</strong> has no boundaries.<br />

Plane of symmetry<br />

The plane that cuts a 3-D object in half,<br />

such that each half is a mirror image of<br />

the other with the plane as the mirror<br />

[see p. 101].<br />

Platonic solids (Regular solids)<br />

The five polyhedra in which all faces are congruent <strong>and</strong> all angles are<br />

congruent; i.e. the regular tetrahedron, hexahedron (cube), octahedron,<br />

dodecahedron <strong>and</strong> icosahedron. [Named after Plato the philosopher <strong>and</strong><br />

mathematician in ancient Greece who stated that they represented the five<br />

elements of earth, wind, fire, water <strong>and</strong> the heavens or universe; see p. 99.]<br />

Plumb line<br />

A vertical line. [From the Latin plumbum meaning ‘lead’ <strong>and</strong> based on the<br />

use of a piece of lead on a cord to check vertical positioning. See also<br />

Perpendicular.]<br />

Plus (Add , +)<br />

The expression 9 + 5 may be read as ‘nine <strong>and</strong> five’, as ‘nine add five’ or<br />

as ‘nine plus five’.<br />

pm (p.m.)<br />

Abbreviation for the Latin words post<br />

meridiem meaning after noon.<br />

evening.<br />
